it's official, I've converted to Linux

I've got two PC's and today, I upgraded my main to Redhat. Let me tell you this, I'm loving it. I've got my second PC running win2k so if there's ever anything I can't do on Linux, I can do there.

Not only am I learning all this cool new stuff, but I love the feeling of not using an MS product 🙂

And that pretty much only means games. With the exception of games, anything I used to do in windows is now done in Linux, often better. And slowly, games are becoming less of an exception. Welcome to a better family.

I've been puttering around with Debian/Mandrake/Slack. I use it mostly for for feeling 1337, as my main thing is gaming which STILL works better on Win98 (at least until WineX is totally viable)

I am gonna try BSD this week...

If I can find a mirror for the iso's that runs at a reasonable speed.

BTW..linuxboy uses BSD...

I was gopnna try that, but Mandrake 8.1 didn't wanna boot after install, so I decided to wait for the next gen (Gnome2,KDE3, OpenOffice)


The only thing that'll hold me back is filesharing. There's no decent apps for linux 🙁

But seriously, pine provides everything I need in an email package. I dislike images and html in email. If I want to see the image, I open it up.

The office suites meet my needs, which is just word processing for my classes, and the occasional spreadsheet.

But I'll be the first to admit the Linux isn't a desktop monger yet, but then again, windows isn't a server monger yet. I prefer Linux on my desktop because I disagree with Microsofts business practices, and in the end it's more fun (but then again someone once said "Linux is free if your time is worthless"). So like you said, to each their own.

PS. Linuxboy, I'm downloading NetBSD right now.

Have you tried the latest version of OpenOffice? It's pretty good 🙂

E-mail software? Well, I use Kmail and it does everything I want to. then there of course Evolution... And of course there are Pine and others. I really fail to see what Windows email-clients have that Linux-alternatives lack (well, Outlook has built-in virus-magnet, the Linux mailers lack that 😉).

As for office-suites... There's OpenOffice... It's getting better and better all the time... KOffice has trendemous potential and it's lighweight when compared to OpenOffice. Altrough they could use more developers.
 
For my every day work, I tend to use win2k on my desktop and winXP on my laptop. However, if I feel like messing around with somthing more technical, I boot into my debian install on my desktop. My laptop dosen't have linux on it.
 
You have crossed over to the dark side. Microsoft is like the Republic Senate, and Linux is like the Empire trying to take over. 😉 Linux is not a viable alternative for me right now. I've tried it, don't like it but I'm probably gonna try it again some day just to see how it's progressing. So far I'm not impressed.

BTW: For you Linux nuts out there, don't take my first sentence as a death threat or anything and overreact. It was a JOKE! 🙂

the next step is to compile your own, then roll out your own distribution, then write your own os compeletely from scratch (compiler and all)
