Its official, 4 year degree needed even for file clerks, minimum wage jobs

So the status quo fails to pick job applicants, and college status fails to pick job applicants.

Basically I'm not saying we have no way to discern good job applicants, but.... there isn't really a way to discern good job applicants.

Why bother going to college if you aren't going to get a good job? Whats REALLY making the difference in who gets good jobs and who doesn't then?

Its fuzzy now but I think with time it will be sorted out.

We've moved onto mostly nepotism for status and job privileged. I think this is the way things are trending over college. People who need to get a certain degree for a job that practically has their name on it vs those who are there and lost.

What your gonna see in the future. College degree to get any job. No college degree you will get no job period, even at Mcdonalds flipping burgers.

This is what to expect in the future.

I interviewed for a file clerk position after college, what a joke. I think I got passed on because I came across as interviewing for a position above me.. i.e. I talked about interest in the legal field etc. Like I really went to college to be a $10/hr file clerk are you kidding

i made more than that as an intern with an AS...jeebus

It's simply a defensive move on the company's part. There is less upside in making a terrific hire based on "gut feeling"that's worth more than his wage (e.g creates $14/hour of value vs. the other candidate who would create only $10) than there is risk of a not using an objective standard like having a degree and being sued for unfair hiring practices or creating disparate impact to a minority applicant.

Huge demand in the trades right now, pay is good and most don't require college education. The only drawback is you actually have to work...

it wont happen anytime soon. this increase of grads with 4 year degrees is artificial, just like the housing market.

would you want a smart kid with a 4 year degree and a mountain of debt, or a smart kid with 4 years of job experience and no debt?

I simply don't see it. Will it happen on the marketing/Media level? Yes!!!

In reality, no way in hell.

Anyone in the real world will tell you that 4 year degree means NOTHING. I'm on my 3rd career and over 15 years of professional experience (I have no degree) and these kids that are coming out of college are no different than high school graduates these days. I've hired/worked with many.

Heck, most companies look at your work experience LONG before they look at your college degree/school.

At the end of the day it will always be WHO the person is (how they present themselves, who they are, how they get along/fit in etc) AND their willingness to learn. That's something that no college can teach.

But yes, our society/banks and media's goals are to extract 4 years of college tuition from each and every member/family. Don't buy into that crap too much. If you want to do a certain trade and college is the way to get there, do it. Just keep in mind MANY trades don't require college.

Our government should really outlaw worthless degree programs....and stop handing out loans left and right to everyone and their mother (read: work for the banks).

Well, this was January 09. I graduated December 2008 (great timing!)

During that month I also interviewed for a part time valet job. Interviewer told me just was interviewing 8 people, I was pissed she was wasting my time. Took me over an hour to get there.. Give me a break not like you're hiring the CEO

From the article:

"I am over $100,000 in student loan debt right now," said Megan Parker, who earns $37,000 as the firm's receptionist. She graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta in 2011 with a degree in fashion and retail management"

If you go for a worthless degree, don't be surprised you will get a shit job. Do not bitch about being a Starbucks Barista/receptionist/toilet scrubber.

That's hilarious.

What was it people were saying about college graduates being harder to exploit?

There's a big difference between someone with a degree in Electrical Engineering vs. a degree in Sociology.

Yeah, I graduated with a BSEE in 1993 and $38K was around the average starting salary then. The listing you saw is by someone who is trying to take advantage of the bad economy but is being very short-sighted; no one will stay in that position long at that pay.

Considering how many people have called me trying to hire me away, I doubt they will get a serious sniff from anyone who is remotely qualified, much less actually be able to hire someone.

You mean when the supply of college degree's is higher than what the market desires? The value of the degree falls?

Shocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what are you smoking? Per the OP they clearly DESIRE people to have degrees

they value degrees so much they will only hire people with degrees

I thought I only knew one person with a Master's degree working a security job.

Two weeks ago I found a second one.

I mean, these people aren't managing security ... they're security guards, with a masters.

They wont...because they bill $300+ an hour and pay college educated clerks $10. Keep hoping though.

So you think the masses of College educated clerks making $10 hr will be happy about making $10hr indefinitely?

Give thousands of people (near-)free-ride scholarships/grants to party and get by with a 2.5~3.0 GPA in some worthless major and the value of said degree loses value? What a shock!

EDIT: fuck genx beat me to it

Only because they are still a step above a high school diploma. Devaluing a random Bachelor's gives the illusion that a person hasn't tried when they lack such an easy-to-attain title. Surely file clerks and minimum wage jobs aren't particularly valuable.

Its a vicious circle. The main reason people go to college is theres not enough good jobs available.

Of course its even worse when they get liberal arts or womens studies or other nonsense. Or art history, or philosophy.

cuz some people without a college degree can't figure out the right way to handle food or file paperwork.

u wanna hired some guy that can't read, deliver the package to the wrong place and you end up in jail because of that mistake ?

Let me guess; you have a doctorate?

Any fucking retard can graduate from college these days. It's just paying money in the hopes of making more money. Hooray 'higher education' pyramid scheme.
