So you're the PC tech. Your job is to fix the problem, not create new ones. When my monitor doesn't work, replace it. Don't jack with my mouse. It's set that way because I like it. So what if the computer name isn't "standard". It's named that for a reason. I didn't ask you to fix it, it's not hurting anything, so leave it alone. It's NOT YOUR PC!!! Don't wait until I go home to mess with it. Especially if you can't fix it by the time I come in. And you aren't even going to give me an email or leave a note as to why it's locked out and can't get on the network? It's not yours, leave it alone. AND REPLACE MY MONITOR!!!

Update

He fixed it by renaming the PC to what it was before he messed with it. The name his group gave it to begin with.

Uh, most techs name PCs in a standard way to prodvide a level of organization amongst all the workstations.. so yes, it is hurting something, the organizational structure. If you're using a corporate PC, then you have NO right to bitch about that.

I don't have rights to change the name. They gave it that name. There is a conflict on the network so they added a "-1" after the name to eliminate the conflict. Besides, it wasn't hurting anything and it's been that way for over a year. If he's going to fix it, he needs to tell me first. It's a critical computer and I can't afford for it to be unusable.

Normally I wouldn't care. But like I said, this PC is critical. If something happens it's our ass, not the pctech.

As far as naming standards go, the IT guys should be able to set it. When I started my current job about 3 years ago, most of the systems here were named according the person who was assigned that computer. The problem is that people come and go, and the system name never got changed. There were systems named for users that had been gone for a year or more. When we finally started replacing the old systems, we set up a naming standard. It has to be followed. Now, I keep a master list of the users cross-referenced with their pc name.

So, from an IT point of view, it's a whole lot closer to being MY pc that is YOUR pc. Just because you use it every day doesn't make it yours.

It's the COMPANY'S PC.. we name the PC how the COMPANY wants it named, and remember your damn username and password next time and you won't get locked out from entering the wrong one! You bastards only call us when there's a problem and give us an attitude while trying to help fix a problem you most likely initiated like we're the ones who did it! Do me a favor, use your PC for doing work.

I have a laptop. This desktop is only used for work. Please explain how I or the users could have renamed the PC when the only people who can change the name are the IT guys? Please explain how I or the user caused the monitor to fail? Please explain why you're going to fix something that isn't a problem without telling me first. I don't have a problem with you fixing it. I have a problem with the fact that you decided to make an operations PC critical to the operations of the network without notifying anyone first. With a little planning, I could have had software loaded onto another PC and had that ready to use before you took this one.

While we're at it, why haven't you been able to create a loadset for my PCs? Why do I have to load all the software?
