it's not proper to take a 5 year old girl into the liquor store is it?

parents with kids are generally OK. 22 year olds with 20 year olds is frowned upon. Depends on the state I think but where I went to school, it really depended on the store.

I doubt it's legal in most places, but they don't seem to care unless you're trying to pass for 21.

Was she trying to pass for 21?

Why would it be illegal to enter a liquor store under the age of 21? If I remember, all the signs in a liquor state you need to be 21 to purchase liquor? And the only time you're carded is when purchasing.

I don't think there's an age requirement to be in there. See my Fritos comment, above.

Edit:

I'm fairly certain it is in PA... I remember during that hellish year of college when I was 20 but all my friends were 21, I had to wait right next to the door while my friends bought liquor for me.

Hmm, guess it varies by state.

It does vary. Here in NC, at least some of the ABC stores require ID before entrance.

Oh, so now adults accompanied by children are not allowed in retail stores. That's just silly. Now if it was the child unaccompanied by an adult making a purchase, OK, but an adult, even with child in tow, has the same rights and priviliges as anybody else. Stop trying to oppress others.

That's just because they didn't want to be seen with you.

They ID'd you as you entered the store?

they looked at me sternly, and you really don't want to piss off the one liquor store in walking distance. lol.

The employees and the owner didn't want to be seen with you either. :p

You need to be 16 to drive, so he shouldn't have even let a 5 year old in the van go there to begin with.

No big deal. We took both our kids, 5 and 3 at the time, into the liquor store to get stocked up for our Christmas party last December. Got a cartload of booze.

My dad would occasionally take me into the liquor store when we were out shopping when I was little. He didn't go there often, just maybe twice a year. I knew it wasn't stuff I wanted anyway, as I'd been allowed to taste wine, beer, whiskey, and vodka. I also knew that it wasn't stuff for kids. I couldn't imagine why anyone would ever want to drink the stuff - beer was at least marginally tolerable, but the others were just awful.
So I'd just read the bottles patently while he found what he was looking for.

She's not gonna get drunk by being in the store, genius. My mom had me in tow numerous times as we ran errands, a stop often including the liquor store. It's a store. I somehow survived.

I don't understand why anyone would consider this inappropriate. It's just a store that sells alcohol. At that age, kids have fun doing just about anything. They probably would get a kick out of all the different bottles. I know my daughter would; she likes all the different bottles at grocery store where I buy my alcohol.

AFAIK, you don't need to be 21 to be in a liquor store. Hell, I'll be working at one this December and I'll only be 19.
Some areas you do need to be 21 just to be on the premises, I had a 19 year old friend get bit for it (and the liquor store got a fine too) because the clerk let him use the bathroom. Their case got wiped out and the judge is now trying to get that law/regulation/whatever-it-is struck down, but it's technically still in effect.

However, they do make an exception for a child accompanying an adult. So to the original question, it's perfectly fine to take your kid into a retail beverage outlet.

They sell liquor at the supermarket here in California. I don't see the big deal quite honestly.

Yeah... it doesn't really make much sense. I wasn't aware there were other states that didn't allow it to be sold in supermarkets other than here though. It's such a stupid law.
yeah. we have that here in oregon, too. i wouldn't even be surprised if the state owned them, as well. they don't even have names... they're all named "Liquor"
