It's hard to find clothes that fit if you're in shape?

The average American is fairly portly, which is what clothes are designed for. It's hard to find clothes that fit right if your're muscular and have a small waist.

Anyone found any good brands, especially polo shirts?

Yes. Banana Republic has many shirts with a touch of lyrca in them. This gives a tiny bit of stretch to the clothing and it fits an athletic build really nicely. I'm 6'2" and in shape. For short-sleeved shirts (ie. polos, tees), I find that a size Medium gives the best fit. These are normally more expensive than their other clothes (which are already expensive). Just wait for them to go on sale. :)

I have a problem that way too,I'm a 5ft 9 inch gal who wears a size 6 but the inseam of my pants is a 34(wearing a low to moderate heeled shoe)finding stuff that fits right and that's long enough is a major pain.

Polo style shirts are all pretty much the same in my experience. If you're looking for something with more of an athletic cut or designed to fit trimmer builds your best bet is to simply shop in the departments or stores that cater more toward younger guys instead of full-grown men.

I'm a thin guy and I find that most clothes fit me pretty well. I wear a 31-32 pants in some stores, and a 33-34 in others. As for shirts, I wear a medium or large in most places, but have found that in stores like AE I wear a small.

Stop shopping at Walmart.

Buy designer clothes, they fit much better.

Most of the shirts today look like too-short dresses on me. It is tough to find a shirt that fits a 6' guy with a 46" chest and a 31" waist. Yes, you can buy the stretchy stuff, but then I feel kinda "festive" if you catch my drift.

Sweat pants are anouther problem. If I buy a large, the length is right, but the waist is too big. If I buy a medium, the waist fits, but the length is too short. :(

You think that's tough.. my g/f is 6' tall, size 12. Her inseam is like a 36. The only store that sells pants with those measurements is this place called Tall Girl....heh.

I wouldn't exactly group myself in the physically fit category but I'm fairly thin (5'6" 125lbs) and I have a heck of a time getting clothes that fit right. In fact my mom and sister bought me a bunch of clothes for my birthday and pretty much everything was too big in one way or another. As Amused said the majority of shirts nowadays make me look like I'm wearing a dress so I've got to sift through dozens of shirts before I find one that fits right (although I guess with the right heels and a matching purse these long shirts might not be too bad ;) :p ).

Anyway, I don't know if it's your style, but I found some good clothes at american eagle which fit me pretty good. I think this is the first sweater that I've bought that is actually form fitting and doesn't have enough room for an extra person. They had quite a few polo-type shirts there so it might be worth checking out.

Depends on your dimensions and bodytype really.

I'm 5'7" but at my peak fitness level (i'm married now with 2 kids 3 and under so i'm toast) I was around 235lbs with a BF at around 9% while weightlifting/bodybuilding. I have a endo/mesomorphic bodytype. Very stocky/muscular with a hard time getting really, really lean. I hate cardio!

Anyways, I was very hard to fit off the rack which didn't really tick me off since it's been like that for a long time. If I were to find a dress shirt off the rack i'd have to try to find a 33/34 sleeve, 19 neck. Invariably, you're never gonna find an off the rack size like that. I had to get a couple custom tailored.

Pants were brutal too as my waist was around 34ish but because of my large thighs and being 5'7" the length was usually way too long which meant I had to get them hemmed. I liked getting my pants double-hemmed because it helps taper the pant leg. Otherwise it looks like i'm wearing floods because the hemmed part tends to fold over itself because of the extra material around that area.

After getting married and losing that realistic urge to impress other women I would end up wearing more sweats, grey Russell/Champion/Polo t-shirts and - believe it or not - outdoor clothing like climbing gear by Prana and others that specialize in relaxed fits with lots of room for movement.

I will wear out the inseam of my pant leg because of the rubbing action between the thighs. Get holes there all the time. Don't know how many sweat pants I went through or my mom would patch up. I didn't care about the looks after awhile as long as there wasn't a hole there!

If I ever went looking for jeans or clothes that "regular" people wear I would look for very relaxed type of clothing. Painters pants, cargos. No slim leg for me. Casual tops are difficult because the body would be fine but the arm lengths would be way too long.

Anyways, tha'ts my story and my quasi-recommendations on what to look for.

If you are in shape and of regular body-type then that's great because you'll look great in almost anything.

Yes I've noticed places like Gap and Old Navy sizes are HUGE.
Banana's normal non-stretch shirts are too baggy for me, I have to get their stretch fits.
But Club Monaco and Zara shirts are perfect, slight taper and doesn't swim on shoulders...

You know what bothers me about this thread? That people still admit to wearing sweat pants....talk about having given up on trying to impress. Sweatpants scream: "Look at the out of shape, lazy man/woman who has simply given up trying to look decent and decided to toss on a pair of grey cotton pajamas and wear them in public" :)

When you're married and have rugrats sweatpants are the easy choice because you can get ketchup, cookie crumbs and the juices of fruits when your kids come up to you to wipe their hands off your clothes - and you don't give a crap.

We do a full load of laundry EVERY night. Sometimes 2x if it's been a busy outdoor swimming-in-dirt kinda day.

I'd hate to put my Banana Republic through all that stress.

:D

Um, huh? I wear sweat pants to the gym and back in winter, and while running if it's below 45 degrees outside or windy and below 55.

WTF am I supposed to wear to the gym? Dress slacks?
