It's game time

I'm looking for a new game to run on my new rig. My old comp couldn't handle anything cool, so I don't know that much about what's out right now. I like FPS, so I was thinking of UT2004 or Halo. I love Halo for Xbox (I don't have one but all my friends do), but I've heard UT was awesome too. FarCry sounds good, but I think I'd need more RAM to do it justice (I'm only running 512MB for now). Any other good games out there that aren't huge time sinks? What do you suggest?

I didn't find Halo to be that great for PC. It was revolutionary as a console shooter, but as a PC shooter it isn't anything special. UT2k4 is pretty awesome. It is very much a good old fashioned frag fest. But man, Far Cry is something else. If you can get another 512MB of RAM then definatly get Far Cry. Otherwise, I guess go w/ UT2k4, but definatly find a way to get far cry in the near future.

For multiplayer, I think Call of Duty is the best I've tried lately. For single player, don't miss Painkiller and Farcry.

You'll really need to upgrade that ram if you want to play either one. ut2k4 really needs it in loading tiles I hear (I woun't know because I have a gig 😀)

UT2K4 runs great on my machine with or without a gig of RAM... I have 512 now, and it makes no difference in loading maps, etc. (I took out a 512 stick to donate to my other PC)

I would suggest UT2K4, then Halo (I just like Halo a lot). Personally, the only reason I will play Far Cry is to see the eye candy.

Maybe try Battlefield Vietnam or Battlefield 1942.

If you run Unreal on lower settings I don't think 512 RAM will be too bad. It runs smooth as butter on my machine (2.4B, 1 GB RAM, FX5200 and only the 5200 is overclocked).

I plan on going to a gig, but it'll probably be a few weeks before I do. I'm running an A64 3000+ with an AIW 9600XT. I've heard Halo is more CPU dependant that video card dependant so that would help me, but UT2004 would be new to me which is a plus. . .

Farcry all the way! The game is a blast once you get the hang of it (you have to take a more methodical approach to each level than the usually shoot-em-up FPS games). I've played the campaign mode for hours and am only about 2/3 done the game. It's a beautiful looking game too... I play it at 1024x768 with all the detail (AA & AF as well) turned up and it looks better than any game I've ever played.

It makes Halo look like a cheap comic book game... (visually, the gameplay is totally different)

I agree 100%! This game is so much more than just blasting away. Stealth is equally important when taking out baddies. The visuals in this game are amazing, too. It's one of the best games I've ever played. Do yourself a favor and get it. 🙂

Out of Halo and UT2k4, I'd say it's pretty clear cut UT2k4 for MP (including simulated MP with bots) and Halo for SP. Both you will need a fairly decent PC for (what cpu & vid card?). Far Cry is easily better than either of those two for SP, IMHO, but does need even more PC than the other two.

Also, for MP, check out Enemy Territory, which is a free multiplayer-only game based on teams, player classes and objectives. ET should play OK on any decent PC (be sure to download ETPro mod, who are basically fixing all the minor bugs and continuing development of ET, ETPro is the "normal" way to play ET now).

Well, I bought UT2004. Though I'll have to wait until I get home to fire it up 🙁 Call of Duty looks good too, since I can only take so much gaming online at a time.

Well there is already a patch released for UT2004 FYI.

Heh where are all the forum nazi's today 🙂

UT2k4, COD, FarCry, and NeedForSpeed Underground are the ones I like to play the most. I've tried many others.

And actually, there are now 2 patches released for UT2k4.

UT2004 is awesome (especially with all the cool mods ex. Troopers😀awn of destiny, Red Orchestrea, Alien Swarm, the list goes on!) Farcry is ok, UT2004 just whips its llama ass.

If you have half-life then you have access to tons of mods (I'm still playing Natural Selection, hasn't gotten old yet)

You can try America's Army. It is great game and it is free.

I've played AA for over a year now and love it. Painkiller is great for a taste of the upcomming physics we weill see in upcomming games such as Halflife2, but after you beat PK it's not super fun, and the multi-player hasn't caught on a lot. I see mostly Euro servers.

You can't go wrong with UT2004 or Call of Duty.

On a downside, Halo for the PC is awful. I would stay away from it by all means and enjoy it on the Xbox.

I forgot about NFS Underground. It takes racing games to a whole new level. I have it and UT 2004 also, but the others I mentioned are my favorites.

For single player get:

FarCry
Splinter Cell
Halo(only if you havent played the xbox one through)

For multi player get:

Halo
Commande&Conquer Generals + C&C Generals Zero Hour Expansion pack
Battlefield 1942 + Expansion Packs
Battlefield Vietnam
Call of Duty

The single player games are awesome, and you will remember them for the rest of your life. The multiplayer games here are the best of the best, not in any order, but most people favor the C&C generals and expansion over the others.

single player:
call of duty (one of the best SP shooters in years[maybe since halflife??]IMO)
SC: pandora tomorow
FarCry (havnt played it myself past the demo yet, but only have heard good things)

multiplayer:
UT2k4 (best unreal game since original UT i think)

IMO Halo isnt a great game. and for PC it sucks. if it had been released on PC same time as xbox it would have been sweet. but that was 2-3 years ago. now its old and tired.

and of course there is still plenty of good times to be had w/ older games like Half life. i still play Day of defeat alot and there are a ton of different free mods.
