I went to apple orchard twice. I don't get the appeal. You do the physical labor of picking the apples and pay more for the privilege. Apples are cheaper at the stores than at the orchards. At least around here.

its costs me 18$ a bushel to pick my own apples, that's massively cheaper then you can buy them for

Paging DrPizza.

I'm going up to cidery this weekend. They have a new hopped one that sounds bizarre but I have to try it. Get some fresh apples from their orchard while I'm at it. Regular (non-alcoholic) cider is great too. Especially hot.

I need to know where, please?

Picked up 10lb couple weeks ago and almost finished, need a reload.

1. Enjoy a nice crisp fall day
2. Enjoy being away from the city and the great views of an orchard
3. Enjoy being around a bunch of happy people
4. Enjoy the changing colors and textures of fall
5. Eat some delicious apple flavored treats and enjoy other activities at the orchard

Jewel is currently selling local apples for $0.69 per pound. I can buy 26.1lbs of apples for $18 without having to do all the work to pick them.

It looks like a bushel of apples weighs about 42lbs. So, while cheaper, I have to drive all the way to Michigan (where the local apples come from to my knowledge), pick them, and then drive back. Certainly, going to end up costing more than the $20 I spend at the store for half that much.

I bought some from the farmer's market on Sunday. I bought a small basket of Haralson apples and a small basket of Honeycrisps.

Wife and I have been eating the honeycrisps all week, just ate the last today.

Last night I used the Haralsons to make my first apple crisp using my grandmother's recipe. Protip: Don't slice the apples too thin. Other than that, it was fantastic. I'll probably make another one after the farmers market on Sunday, just so I can try it with thicker apples.

I guess I'll have to find someone to eat another apple crisp

Your missing the point. The apples i pick from my grandmas orchard taste 10 time better then the stuff in the stores. Every person i give some to says the same thing. Those 69 cent apples at jewel may be cheap but they are also crap. An apple that is fresh off the tree and warmed by the sun makes those store bought apples feel like eating steak with ketchup 🙂

Every Womanfolk I have ever brought to orchard for ripe fruit picking, has lead to ripe fruit picking.

Sounds nice. It's still too hot to be outside around here, but we're getting close.

Mississippi Gulf .. Yea .. too hot until December, then you have 3 or 4 months of nice shorts weather, then heat death!

Ohh How I wish I had the vacation time available to travel again to Nawlins this Dec .. but just have 1 week left so goin to visit friend in Columbia SC area ... and also to drink much beer!

I love the culture around here, but I'd really like to move somewhere with mountains and cool weather. Maybe I can get some guys with a truck to move some gravel and raise the elevation 12000 feet or so... :hmm:

Those apples are from the exact same orchard I can drive to.

The point is, unless you live near an orchard who sells cheap apples, store bought apples are cheaper and just as good. I'm sure your "feel good feelings" or whatever when nonsense you get when you "support local farmers, who sell these to stores anyway..." is nice, but in the real world, they are the same.

Jewel apples suck compared to hand picked orchard apples. Trust me.

While NY is supposed to have a great year, it was so cold in our little area that a lot of trees never blossomed this spring. Fortunately, I did enough apple sauce and apple butter that I have about 2 more year's worth canned. I'll still be able to get some apples for fresh pressed cider (our own cider press). NY requires fresh cider to be pasteurized. I can't speak for all the cider mills, but the local one seems to have a problem - my unpasteurized cider lasts up to 2 weeks in a cold fridge before there are obvious signs of fermentation. There's doesn't last even 3 days in the same cold fridge before it starts showing obvious signs of fermentation.

Old picture; last year we picked and turned into cider, hard cider, apple sauce, apple butter, apple pies, apple crisp, (etc.), about 5 times as many apples. We have dozens of apple trees; and the nearby state wildlife lands have hundreds upon hundreds of apple trees. This year, only about 10% of the trees have significant numbers of apples.

You can go ahead and live in your delusions, but i will continue to enjoy my superior apples while you eat your jewel deer-feed quality apples.

Ontario apples seem to be a bit smaller this year. Probably for the same reason, despite all the rain we've had.

My trees are not quite ready yet, the iphones are a bit bendy this year and I don't have any ipads sprouting yet. I think it might be a bad crop season this year due to the terrible weather we had.

It's weird that an apple thread would turn out to be so similar to an Apple thread.

It's just indicative that people can be snobbish about absolutely anything, and snobbery tends to turn people into complete assholes. "You're not doing it the exact way I would do it? LET ME EXPLAIN YOUR INFERIORITY THROUGH THIS NUMBERED LIST." In the spirit of piling on, apples suck and are useful only for making sub-par booze.

Btw, I would say that snobbery immediately divides the population into snobs and snobkillers. The instinct to puncture a snob is as widespread as the instinct toward snobbery.
