Bateluer

At this time next saturday, I'll be running my first Ultra Marathon. Its only a 50K, but its still my first. Definitely invested a lot of training into it. Last saturday was my 28 mile training run, and I did 12 friday night. Was definitely pretty demolished afterwards, but after a toilet, shower, and long nap, I was feeling fine.

I'm shooting to finish it in under 5 hours, with a primary goal of 4:45. My PR for a full marathon is 3:59, but that was last Feb and I've invested a LOT more time training since then. At the 28mi run last week, I passed the 26 mile mark at 3:40, I think.

Definitely getting faster. 🙂

god invented cars for a reason. good luck and congrats on a being able to finish such a distance.

Congrats man, the kind of mental and physical prep required to even consider entering one of those events is impressive.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that line "it's only a 50K" 😛

Thanks for the support. It going to be a busy few months, lot of races between October and February here.

Good luck Bateluer. I just did my first 50k yesterday and my plans of a 5 hr race were demolished by massive hilliness, roots, and rocks. And despite the pain I'm in today, which isn't as bad as I was expecting it to be btw, the experience was amazing I'm remmbering it all with fondness. The trail and ultra running communities are supportive and friendly and both were in attendance.

Which race are you doing Bateluer? Is it roads or trails? Is it flat, hilly, or in between? If it's trails, is it a technical course? Come on man, fill us in. 🙂

Its usually a smaller event. Its a trail event, but on maintained trails. Not supposed to be a super difficult course, even though it is 10 5K loops.

I've invested a lot of training in so I don't anticipate any major hiccups, though my 28mi training run last weekend kinda zombified me for the day. Got home, used the toilet, showered, and went to bed from 11am to 5pm. And stayed up all night at a Halloween party drinking beer. 😀

The friends I've done a lot of my training runs with have been great and I wouldn't have even considered doing this run if they hadn't helped me train.

Heh - that line cracks me up every time. One of the other hardcore runners on this forum commented that he loves half-marathons, they're "fun". I don't think I have the stick-to-it-ness required to train my body to run that far 🙂

Well, to defend Bateluer's "only" comment, in the ultra running community 50K is a baby ultra. There are 100 mile and beyond races out there. Check out the Western States 100 or Leadville 100, those are the two biggies and they are the Boston Marathon of the ultra trail running world.

Um, that may have been me 😳. Half-marathons ARE fun though!

I have to say though, good luck Bateleur and I hope you have a really fast time out there. Marathons are painful enough...I don't know if I could hold on for another 8 km.

Rip it up out there man!

Almost 1 day left. 🙂

Halves are easy, almost no prep time for me anyone. Don't even bother to really carbo load in the days prior. 😛 Don't do them too often though, any event that has a half usually also has a full, and those are even more fun. 🙂

Have a blast out there Bateluer. And make sure to post a race report.

I rocked. Total time was 4:56:06 though my GPS read 32.19. Bonus mile. 🙂

Got a couple awards . . . Confused Puppy Award and 2nd in my age division, 20-29.

Good Job! I get s.o.b. just thinking about running 50K.

i read an article about ultramarathons a few years back... the guy they did an article on was this buff guy who runs 200 miles or so, nonstop. i wanted his babies.

Dean Karzanes? He's high profile but not the most extreme out there. Check out David Horton's exploits, that guy is an endurance monster.
