Ouch, I'm glad I managed to find a fluid one. Compared to my IBM its pretty noisy.

Hmmm...Phillips rebate...I'm not so sure about it after the $40 CDRW fiasco last year.

Compared to my last maxtor (a 30gb 7200rpm drive I had a few years ago) its much quieter. At idle you can't hear it. But you can definetly hear it when its reading/writing. I'm coming from an IBM 60gxp though, which was probably the quietest hard drive I'd ever heard, I barely knew when it was working.

I agree on how quiet this drive is! I love it! Actually THEM. I put two in my computer and now the only thing I hear is the HSF. Some of the HSF's make you want to go back to the days of quiet 386 machines. ;) But as for the IBM drive, I got rid of mine because of the reported problems with my particular model. Ebay is good for somethin'!

This sounds familiar :) Wouldn't you say its louder than the IBM when reading/writing though? What model IBM did you have?

I got 2 quantum fire as drives and I don't here anything from them... I see people complaining abt drive noise all the time... is it really that noisy? I mean shldn't your hsf drown out all the sound?

I ordered the drive on Friday, 6/14/02. It arrived today, 6/17/02--Fast!!

I received the ATA133 drive. It doesn't have the add-on card, but it is the fluid bearing drive with the L6L4 number, not the ball bearing model.

Great deal!

I think it's mentioned in the other thread about this same deal:
Duplicate Thread, with posts about fluid vs. ball

Some think one type is better than other . . . probably no big deal either way.

Might want to hold that order. The MIR is good for purchases up to June 15 :( Damn!

Grr... I hate staples! Cold deal for me cause of that rebate expiring! Check it out:

I order on the 15th, thinking that I'll be able to get in on the rebate. Staples doesn't ever inform me of the fact that they're out of stock and never asks me if I'd like to proceed, they just go ahead and ship. Today, I get 2 packages - no hard drive, though. With one is an invoice that states that they charged me $21.66 for the 2 items I received (which, incidentally, only cost 10.26 together).

After calling, I find out that Staples just decided to charge me for the $30 of $150 coupon I used, since it no longer applied because of the missing hard drive. They then gave me back credit (and I still don't get where the $21.66 total comes from) for the items I ordered. All in all, it turns out that on a future order I make from them when pointing to this order, they'll credit me 10.something, making it "all even." In actuality, it's not even at all! The drive, first of all, no longer has a rebate, making it essentially 40 bucks more expensive! Top that with the fact that they're gonna charge me another 10 dollars because the drive has gone up in price. So I'm really gonna end up paying 120 for this thing! Geez, for that much, I could get the 100GB version of this drive or the Western Digital 80GB Special Edition...

I'd go somewhere else and get one of those, but Staples has me all messed up, since I take MIRs into my budget and they've now got me not only spending more, but having to spend it at their store (stupid credit)...

Got the drive yesterday, but had a hard time getting the BIOS recognize it. Finally the AMI Bios recognized it after I stuck in the Capacity Limiting Jumper. BIOS lists it as a 37 GB HDD.
I tried formatting the drive using the supplied Maxblast utility but it also kept showing me a partition of 37GB. Realized it had something to do with the Capacity Limiting Jumper. Removed it and this time BIOS recognized it fine (but as a 37GB ) and the Maxblast showed the partiion as approx 76 GB. :)

I have a question tough, my HDD makes a very wierd sound during shutdown. Its like a whine but its kindof loud. Not the normal hum. Is this normal ?
