Did AMD give out all the processors that they had for the raffle? When I first got there, an AMD guy said they were giving about 50 away. Then next time I hear, it was about 40 something. But I don't think 40 names were drawn for processors. I think 10 were given to the "battle" contestants, but where was the other 30?

And what is up with the floppy drives? It seems odd that at several events, everyone had trouble with their floppy drives. The red stripe goes towards the power, right? And you use the end of the cable for drive A? I wonder if in the BIOS, they had it to boot Drive B?

Some of you may not have noticed, but there was an AnandTech "table"
Unfortunately it was in the far-right corner from the entrance, right between a big AMD banner and the non-working monitor. It didn't have any chairs and was terribly cramped, so nobody stayed there.
I hung out there for a few minutes, but not noticing anyone go "Heeey, look! Here's AnandTech!!" I left 😛

Another funny fact from SJ was that the hotel (?) misspelled AMD as American Micro Devices on the monitor at the entrance to the room (the one where all events were listed). I pointed out the mistake to the AMD employees... they didn't fix it, though...

As it happens, I did get that question right, after your first attempt. While I did think it was Creative Labs and not Creative Technologies, the other answer is by no means stupid. I don't know exactly how the company is structured, but the the term Creative Technology is used by the makers of the Sound Blaster cards. Go to creative.com or soundblaster.com and look at the bottom of the page. You'll see: "Copyright © 1998 - 2002 Creative Technology Ltd. All rights reserved". That's right Creative Technology Ltd. While it may not be the name of part of the company that actually makes the cards, it is associated. Anyone know any more about it? Just wondering.

Thanks, Danzilla. I don't feel quite so bad on that question - I knew I've seen "Creative Technology" somewhere on SoundBlaster boxes/ads. If you look in these websites: http://www.soundblaster.com/legal/ http://www.creative.com/company/, it is "Creative Technology", it doesn't even mention "* Labs" anywhere. Oh well, you were the better man that night anyway.

Edit: Ah, if you go http://www.creative.com/company/factsheet.asp, Creative Technology Ltd is the WW Corporate HQ company and Creative Labs, Inc. is the U.S. HQ company. Bleh. Splitting hairs. We were both right.

Yes, that would be me. 🙂 We arrived around 7:45 and Tony flagged me immediately. Now I see why he uses the biker avatar, it's a spitting image of him. 😉 It was great to put a face with a name after all these years.

AMD gave out roughly (25) XP2400's up to the building of the "battle of the boxes", and I assume they gave out the rest afterwards.

The red stripe on the floppy cable connects to pin1, which should be clearly marked when you look at the rear of the floppy drive (to the left). Usually it is on the opposite side that you would connect a typical IDE drive (hdd, cdrom, etc) which has the red stripe on the ide cable closest to the power molex (right side). I told Tony since the pc has to boot successfully the first time, the contestants would either not hook up the floppy correctly, or the HDD/PWR led's would be reversed. 😉

I couldn't agree more on it bring a poorly run event. I would have much rather seen more technical information and some of their partners showing off their products as well. This amounted to nothing more than a over glorified pep rally IMO. :disgust:

Yes, it was fairly disorganized in sjc.. I was there, and when playing some ut2k3 i thought i heard my number (or something close to it being called out), I wasn't sure so i didnt' rush up front or anything - I just asked around and got varying responses from people and proceeded to the winners table where they told me they didn't have the list yet. I went back later on and asked if it had been my number, and i was told that the prizes had been claimed. At the very end, a few minutes after the guy in the ardOCP shirt got his cpu, I went back to ask what number they had called anyway. The guy told me that there'd been some confusion about it and that there was one cpu left. Then he just said here take it and gave it to me, it rocked, hehe. Other than that, it was a highly chaotic show, I wished there were some drinks and perhaps a little food, hehe.

I went to the San Jose one. I didn't bother going an hour early for VIP because I had homework 🙁!

I was front and center at the San Jose one, right next to the loud Russian guy.. I look like 10 and was wearing a light blue long sleeve shirt thing.

Dealchic, I'm sorry, but that Indian guy should have won the dancing contest 🙂 My favorite line was when the Yahoo! chick got the question right and the guy behind me yelled, "Put it on her mustache!" 😀

I came away with a shirt, two hats and a bag (that I had to wrestle the fat guy next to me for..) 🙂 But he was nice and let go when I pointed out he already had a bag.

lol...at the san jose event, I was so depressed after watching the first round of battle of the boxes, we went to the bar during the second round and man, the event was so much better after a long island on a empty stomach.

I wanted to mention that I was at the Austin show. I managed to get my named pulled for the Battle of the Boxes in the 2nd round. I was the hyper guy on the end. The place was impossible to move around so when I got my NEW 62-BIT! (inside joke) processor, I didn't bother to stick around. It sounds like I didn't miss much.

Need help on mobo for 2400+. I won the 1800+ and mobo combo last year, and a 2400+ at the Houston stop this year. The mobo from last year is MSI K7T266PRO. I have Crucial DDR memory. Could you folks who have (or want to have) a 2400+ post in with mobo choices?

You have the exact same setup as me. I just completed the swap yesterday, and am about to put the combo on Ebay to finance the Asus A7V333-Raid that I bought to go w/the 2400+ (Newegg - $135ish). The Crucial was a straight swap, and didn't see the need to spend a bunch more money on PC2700, when the Crucial will overclock to that speed anyway. The system's been great so far; I ran a 24-hr loop on 3DMark2001, with not a glitch to be found, and the CPU never got above 44C.....Way to go, AMD! I'm really, really liking this 13 micron Tbred goodness 😀

64C??? WTF?!? Something's wrong there. You might want to reseat your HSF with some new goo, and make sure you don't have it on backwards.

I've got a Swiftech MC370, 60 to 80mm fan adapter, and a cheap $2 fan from SVC pushing about 27CFM.
I do, however have This case that I bought off Ebay for $5 + shipping, and with it's 13 case fans (4x80mm in front, 2x80 & 2x120 on left, 2x80 on right, 2x80 in rear, 1x80 on top) not including the PSU fans, it keeps it mighty chilly inside!

I am using arctic silver 3 and I definitely do not have the heatsinc on backwards.

I did however discard the enormous fan that came with the heatsinc if favor of a custom made (hack job) Double decker 80mm dojobby. But this only resulted in about a 1degree difference. Not to mension my Lian Li case has incredible airflow with 3 case fans and 2 power supply fans.

Oh well, I guess some have the touch, and some don't.
