It's almost like my local Best Buy doesn't want to make money

Apparently they've learned exactly how uninformed their sales monkeys are and are doing you a favor.

Absolutely this. I never spoken to an employee at Best Buy who knew the first thing about their products. i almost miss the days of commissioned salespersons.

BTW, I have a Best Buy in my neighborhood and one walking distance from my office.

I used to visit BB on a weekly basis back in the early hot deal days. For the past several years I may stop by there once every few months.

I have a friend that spends at least $1000 a month at best buy. He buys every new movie that comes out on blu-ray, tons of PS3 games & various other electronics. I've tried to point out that all of it is cheaper on amazon, and some of it is MUCH cheaper through sites like slickdeals, but he loves best buy. He likes being able to go in, pay and leave with his purchase. Keep in mind he drives an hour one way to the nearest best buy, and goes once a week. Blows my mind.

for him convenience trumps savings. if he has the money, good for him. But I agree, he'd be better off ordering standard shipping at Amazon and have it delivered a few days later, saving him 2+ hours a week plus gasoline.

Q3 profits down 29%.

I have no sympathy for bestbuy. As their foot traffic declined in the economy they went ahead and pushed out the remaining customers with bad policies.

For example cashiers were required to ask customers if they want the bestbuy credit card or they were fired. And the greeters, and the salesmen. So a guy would come up to the register with a DVD he came in for and complain "wow they asked me if I want your god damn rip off credit card 18 times I'm never coming back." and the cashier was like "thats terrible, um.... do you want a best buy credit card?"

And the customer left the DVD and stormed off. Let alone the warranty on the DVD haha. I have no sympathy for a company that makes blatantly retarded decisions. They used the bad economy to leverage their employees into doing stupid suggestive sales tactics. Good riddance. I would imagine they never did stop trying to bullshit their way to success on warranties and high interest creditcards to this day. Too bad.

I can understand why some people like to go to BB for certain things. For me it's just another way to have a blast from the past. I like perusing the movies and games but rarely actually buy anything.

When it's gone I'm sure I will miss it about as much as I miss video stores. Granted I'll probably miss the video stores more. /nostalgia

It was a way to kill time and check out the movies, but we've all gone to the store and all the movies we wanted we rented, so then we move onto sloppy seconds, and without rottentomatoes we can gauge the value of a movie purely by its cover alone. So we pay the five bucks, the movie sucks, and then we burn more gas driving home, too. I guess movies used to "mean" more, though. They were a bigger deal.

Had the same experience when going into BestBuy last week. No one gave a shit that I was wandering around looking at TV's and other stuff too.
I ended up buying it all online.

I honestly don't think I've ever been asked if I wanted the BB credit card while shopping there. Kohl's, on the other hand, asks every time I check out.

The BB credit card is no different than any other retail store's credit card. Use their card, get special promotions, sales, zero interest financing, etc.

I do hope you leave the page up with the cheaper price when you leave.

The more I think about it, the more I realized that I like commissioned salespersons at electronics store. Since I know what I am doing, they cannot oversell me, but, at the same time, they are motivated to find me, help me and get me out the door as fast as possible.

You know while I'm at it, when I bought a laptop at this same best buy two years back it was quite busy but again the employees were as rare as hen's teeth. You'd see them but they were either with another customer who managed to snag them or doing something else (phone, etc.).

I almost have to wonder if this is by design because once you finally get one I am sure some people think "yes, I got him! Ok, now I need to buy the tv since I've already invested 10 minutes standing around".

theres always too many employees at my local BB. usually they huddle in groups talking. I'm always amazed how busy their computer area is though. Had no troubles getting my ipad, found a guy in the area, told him i's wants, i'm out the door in under 10 minutes.

The TV guys are clueless. I've been in there so many times where they were misleading customers with their ignorance and I wanted to jump in and correct them.

It isnt ignorance. Those little punk nerds know everything there is to know about TV's.
BUT, at work they arent being paid to help people. They're being paid to screw people.

Try testing the computer department/Geek Squad. It's funny what answers they give you. They hardly fix computers, more like replace parts if they know how to. D:

I miss the old Best Buy ('90s) when you were given a thick learning manual covering your department. Still have mine for the shipping/receiving department. It was a pain to learn everything that time, but worth it. Too bad never kissed ass to the higher ups, I'd probably still be stuck there.

As for TV's, I found that Video Only is the best place to buy one at the lowest cost...just picked up a 70" LED Sharp Aquos and the the major stores, Frys, Sears, Costco, BB, Walmart were not even close...

I know someone that works in high end IT security sales during the week, but still works his college\grad school job @ Best Buy selling computers because he loves it so much. Says he gets a rush from selling old ladies $3000 computers with tons of gold plated cables and service plans that he doesn't get in his day job. Some people are truly born to sell.
