Lots of infighting in the Texas GOP. House leadership is airing Paxton’s dirty laundry, so Paxton went after Speaker Phelan for being drunk on the job and now everyone’s picking sides.

When the question is asked is this a racist country don't answer directly instead bring up Ken Paxton and Crystal Mason. Throw it back at the questioner.

We'll see tomorrow. I try not to get my hopes up in places like Texas, but it does seem like this douchebag may finally be brought to justice of some sort. Chair of the Repug party of Texas is sticking with Paxton and the usual bullshit. Repug priorities are always disappointing, but still, if it brings chaos and division to the cult I am all for it. Better late than never and may it fuck the feels of many a Texan.

“This sham impeachment is the result of the Phelan leadership team empowering Democrats, allowing them to hold leadership positions and letting them control the agenda,” Rinaldi said in a statement Friday.

Phelan gave the Dems some committee chairs, waaaaaaaa. This of course outweighs any actual criminal behavior for a magat.

He's out. (Suspended pending trial)

Texas House votes to impeach Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton on articles including bribery

The vote triggers Paxton's immediate suspension from office pending the outcome of a trial in the state Senate.

Side note, his wife has one of the 31 votes in the Texas Senate for the trial, with no rules requiring recusal, and it requires at least 2/3 majority to convict (or 21 votes), so he just needs 9 more votes to stay AG unless he's lost his wife's vote (one of the charges was around an alleged affair...). And he already has a couple of those votes almost certainly locked in from his long-term supporters.

Honestly, at this point, it is not even clear if the Texas Senate will bother having a trial at this time - end of legislative session is Monday, and unclear if they will get called back / extend session to conduct trial now or just set a date for the next session (which will be in January 2025... they only meet every 2 years lol).

I'm under the impression that if they don't hold a trial then Paxton remains suspended so that's kind of the litmus test: if he has enough votes to be acquitted AND the right people want him acquitted then the Senate will hold a trial else they will likely just let him stay suspended instead of removing him.

Anyone have a handle on why his criminal trial has been stalled for 7 years? Besides the obvious Republican corruption.

We recently ousted one lawmaker:

I dont see why Paxton is allowed to stay.

It's a good thing they haven't banned Plan B yet.

Slaton’s lawyers had tried to have the complaints dismissed by arguing that his actions occurred at his Austin residence, not in the workplace. But the committee, citing a state court ruling, said its job in investigating the allegations was to "ask whether sufficient facts exist from which to infer a nexus between the sexual conduct and the work environment,” which it concluded there was.

According to the report, Slaton had sexual intercourse with a legislative aide whom he had primary responsibility for overseeing. He invited her to his apartment late March 31 and served her several alcoholic beverages, the committee found. The aide testified that she consumed “a lot of alcohol” and felt “really dizzy" at Slaton's apartment. Sometime on the morning of April 1, the two had sexual intercourse, and the aide got Plan B to prevent pregnancy later that morning.

But they are trying. This is golden.

State House Bill 2709, filed Thursday, would penalize individuals for the use of medication to cause abortion in the state of Texas, whether the pills were acquired at a local pharmacy or through the mail. However, according to a local legal expert, it could also open the door for Texans to be prosecuted for the use of emergency contraception, like Plan B, or in vitro fertilization.

State Rep. Bryan Slaton of Royse City in East Texas filed the bill in order to "close the final loopholes allowing abortion in Texas," according to a press release. He declined to provide further comment on the bill to Houston Public Media.

Here you go. From last year.

Paxton and his attorneys have requested (as if the accused should have to request a speedy and fair trial) the Feds have refused and still carry on this faux prosecution. I've said it before, there used to be "liberals" on this forum, i have no idea where the hell they went because no "liberal" would support this type of injustice.
Yeah, except there is more to the story than you are telling. One of the judges assigned early on agreed to pay a fee per hour for the special prosecutors. Then one of Paxton’s cronies filed a lawsuit saying the fee is too high. Payment to the SPs was stopped and the case has been bounced around to different courts and jurisdictions while the SPs are trying to get paid for the agreed upon fee. All of the delay shenanigans came from Paxton’s side and now he is playing the victim.

I don't think in general he's any worse than any others. I think he stepped on the wrong toes. Certainly not the first time a Mob turned on one of the family for stepping out of line.

I mean Daniel Cameron essentially sanctioned murder by police and nobody even blinked an eye.
