It has nothing to do with him being good or bad. He pulled a Madison Cawthorn and was airing other Republicans’ dirty laundry. That’s the only reason they turned on him.
I thought part of it was Paxton essentially paying off various whistleblowers from his office ($3.3M I think) with taxpayer funds without “authorization”.

Honestly, at this point, it is not even clear if the Texas Senate will bother having a trial at this time - end of legislative session is Monday, and unclear if they will get called back / extend session to conduct trial now or just set a date for the next session (which will be in January 2025... they only meet every 2 years lol).
Then again .....

"Proceedings are expected to start at 1 p.m. local time on Sunday and Paxton had earlier called for protests at the state Capitol in Austin."

Don't really know the guy..
Don't really think highly of the GOP in Texas

Highly doubt they've started to believe in values all of a sudden.

Likely something not being made public about what he did
But apparently it has really pissed off his Republican friends.

Don't really subscribe to conspiracy theories but this is truly a case of one where you can theorize conspiracies wildly and if it connects all the dots.. you might be onto something.

Anyone have a handle on why his criminal trial has been stalled for 7 years? Besides the obvious Republican corruption.
Because the Republicans never wanted anything to happen with it. The only reason they impeached him now is because they didn't want to be complicit in his crimes when he wanted the state congress to approve $3.3 million to pay off a settlement against the whistleblowers for him, which would have required them going on record and saying Paxton did nothing wrong while the feds are investigating Paxton. They didn't want the feds to come investigate them for corruption too. This is purely the rats voting against him for self preservation, the Texas GOP is pure scum and does nothing for noble reasons.

^^^ No later than August 28. And that date wasn't set until later yesterday.

Meanwhile, Kenny II has assumed the position:

"Webster took over for Jeff Mateer, a controversial figure in his own right, who resigned that month after reporting Paxton’s alleged criminal behavior to law enforcement agencies along with seven other top Paxton aides.

His work with the attorney general quickly mired him in legal problems of his own.

Webster faced a professional misconduct case brought by the State Bar of Texas for helping Paxton file a long-shot federal lawsuit seeking to overturn the 2020 election results in four battleground states that handed the White House to President Joe Biden."

-------------------------
"Webster also played a prominent role in a whistleblower lawsuit filed in 2020 by four former executives who claim they were fired from the attorney general’s office in retaliation for reporting their concerns about Paxton’s behavior to law enforcement.

Webster, the lawsuit alleged, personally fired or participated in the firing of several of the whistleblowers and contributed to an atmosphere of harassment and intimidation directed against whistleblowers."

Which is pretty much what Kenny was booted for.

Above Twitter msg doesn't mention who, why, etc.

"Nate Paul, a real estate investor and close associate of impeached Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, was arrested by the FBI Thursday afternoon"

"Paul’s arrest followed a yearslong federal investigation into the Austin real estate developer — a probe that Paxton involved his office in..."

Nobody seems to know yet what the charges are but, "records showed he was being held on a federal detainer for a felony."

Vote happening soon. I’m surprised, the wife has been forced to not vote. Unfortunately she remains present, so it doesn’t lower the threshold of 21 needed to vote to remove. So it helps Paxton still.

From what’s happened so far I get the strong sense he is screwed.

The GOP is a criminal conspiracy.

Yeah ... There were only two Republican Senators (out of 19) who voted “aye” on any counts. Notably, both are Senators who have broken with Lt. Govenor Dan Patrick in the past. The unanimity with which the remaining Republican Senators voted “nay” strongly suggests that they were instructed to do so by Patrick. Plus....Firing the whistleblowers was pretty clear cut and there wasn’t even a majority to convict.

It’s a shame, Looking in from afar, it looks like there are a couple of Republican Senators trying to do some good things on some niche issues. But Patrick will only let them work on things they care about if they’re slavishly loyal to his position on everything he cares about. Otherwise they find themselves pulled off committees, their bills dead, their donors not returning phone calls and a well-funded primary opponent knocking on their door.

Sounds a lot like the mob.
