An apartment in the lower east side probably costs twice as much as your house now.
It used to be a shitty neighborhood but not anymore. It's a hipster-filled, trust-fund-kiddie-laden posh area now.
I love hearing people talking about NYC as a shithole. It's great. They're almost always from the suburbs where the crime rate is usually higher. NYC's a big area, dude. There's, what, 20 million people in the metro area? Try taking the crime rate of the nearest neighborhoods to your own until you get to 20 million people and then compare.
So paying twice as much for an apartment vs a house with land and a workshop is a good thing?
Also I got the crime figures for my town (last reported year i could find) you can multiply it to adjust to NYC population. Murder=0 Rape=0 Arson=0 Robberies=1 (16.3 per 100,000)
