so it took 1.5 hours just to get a frikkin renewal on my ID. there were 20 people in front of me. five 60-70 year old women working like snails. wth. i loathe coming here. its always the same thing. they misspelled my name wrong and had to redo the form. same with the guy in front....misspelled his name. get with the program folks...we should be able to do this crap online.

1.5 hours? You gotta be fucking kidding me man. you are one lucky fucker

Here in Houston going to the DMV you gotta plan for a camp out. You better bring food and drink you will be starving by the end. The line in order to get into line#2 literally before it opens is filled to the brim and wraps halfway around the entire building.

I wanted to change my License picture because it was when I was still a fattie. I took 1 look at the line and said... "Fuck it, guess I'm always going to be a fattie in my picture."

That's why you show up when the doors open and be the 5th in line... 5th since someone will show up before you do.

I found if i go into the main branch it takes that long. but i found a DMV that is in the middle of the country at a gas station! whenever i go in maybe 1-2 people are in. i get in fast and out fast.

next week i get to wait in line at the Social Security office. lost my kid's SSN card. then back again to DMV to make a state ID. this is going to be fun. 🙁

There is no incentive for the DMV to be efficient. In fact, they get to hire more people the more inefficient they are.

The DMV is a viscous circle. Typically the people they hire are crappy to begin with. It doesn't help that more than half the people that go to the DMV are also idiots as well.

Two DMVs I've gone to over the years living in this neck of the woods.

The one in the city where the Somali guys speak Spanish, the white people speak Somali, everybody speaks English, and the employees stated until 7 pm to make sure the mass of humanity was helped. Really helped me appreciate my fellow human beings.

The one in the suburbs that nobody - even the people who live in that town - knows about, where I've never had to wait in line, and where you have to explain everything twice because "Stripper" would have been an overly ambitious career plan for these ignorant mouth breathing cows.

But the lines are short and I have a car. So, 'burbs it is.

I went to my DMV office last week. 45 minute wait but that was due to the quantity of people (we recently enacted a privilege card). The employees diagnosing each issue were fast, efficient and courteous. The technicians handling customers knew what they were doing and nobody was sitting around picking their nose.

Make an appointment. I got my license renewed a few weeks ago and was in an out in under 30 minutes. That included a change of address, vision test and taking a new photo.

Renewed my Illinois driver's license at nearby DMV (5 blocks away, renewal and plate sticker only, no drivers test) last Nov 2012. 10 people ahead of me, took a number, filled in the form. 2 ladies to take the forms, 1 lady to take photograph. My number was called, paid $10 for renewal. Took vision test and new photo (old one was 8 years old). Done in 20 minutes. Kept my old license after they punched a hole to invalidate it. 😉

Went to renew our passports today. When we got to the office, there must have been at least 100 people ahead of us. I figured it would take forever. We were done in less than an hour. The government office workers at the desk were extremely fast, courteous and efficient. Way faster then any DMV workers I have ever seen.

This is why I am glad I don't have to deal with the DMV for another year. It's about 3 hours to get thru it here...2 if you go in the middle of the week at about 10am...

They have it split here, one place does your license and another place does your car tags. The license folks in run by the state. The registration folks are privately owned businesses so they do have incentive to be efficient, more folks through the more money they make. I've never had any issues at either one.

Renewed mine online last time. Good for another eight years!

Try getting a license if you don't have a photo ID - 1.5 months would be more likely, if it's even doable in your state.

😕 I feel like your sentences are contradictory.

They hire more people but they aren't efficient enough (by private industry standards) to justify the body count. Put in another way, by changing inefficient business process you can hire less people or fire crappy people. However, a large portion of these jobs are basically political patronage so politicians want to keep the head count high.
