iTablet rumors again

Surprising to see it so high on Job's radar, disappointed to see it so damn expensive, but it will likely be subsidized by whatever carrier lands the contract, I have a suspicion it'll be Verizon unless ATT is properly assimilated 🙂

Apple Insider

Key points leaked:

1.) The tablet has been carefully developed under Job's watchful eye.

2.) 2010 Q1 launch

3.) 3G/WiFi connectivity (I'm going to guess it'll cost $50/month for the data plan for a subsidized tablet)

4.) The tablet was delayed because they went with an internally sourced ARM processor instead of an Atom CPU reportedly because of poor battery life of the Atom & the supporting chipset(s).

5.) The price point will be ~$799. (but if subsidized, I suspect it'll sell for netbook prices with a contract, ~$400-$500.)

6.) And the killer apps are: Movies, streamed or downloaded, games and ebooks (or will they be iBooks? Financial Times

I guess "poor battery life" means they were going to use the Intel 945 chipset. Why they'd use the arm instead though rather than an x86 processor. Basically, it sounds like it's just going to be a supersized iPhone rather than a proper tablet system that runs OS X. So far, I'm not impressed. I guess tablets are at best a niche market though so it doesn't really matter to us consumers at large.

I'd pay $800, then I'd sell my iPhone 😉

In the past, I wasn't a huge fan of the ideal of an Apple Tablet. I also thought touchscreens on normal desktop computers are stupid (and still do). But now that I've spent a few years with my iPhone, I'd definitely like something bigger - around 10" would be *perfect*. I can think of a million ideas for using it, so I'm really looking forward to one!

I agree; it probably won't even run a full-blown version of OS X...a "supersized iPhone," as others have put it.
Not worth the price (even subsidized) to me, either.

As a tablet PC it has little value. But for the mp3car community I think this has the opportunity to be an elegant solution. The integrated data plan means you can leave your cell phone free to receive calls, not tethered as a modem. The screen is touchscreen which is most common in cars. iTunes or an iPod interface will be native and smooth. Finally a native GPS app will have a lot of screen real estate to make navigation easier. The cost of all the accessories needed to make a car pc fully functional can easily reach $800.

I'll have to pass on this. I'd have no use for it 🙁

Furthermore, I'm not interested in products that come attached with a cell phone plan - unless it's a cell phone.

That's just me.

Same here. I can't think of one reason why I would a computer in that form format.

It would be interesting though, if this supposed tablet could run both OS X and Iphones operating system, allowing you to use it as a regular computer and use iPhone apps as well. Doubt it will happen though.

That said, I like my laptop, and I can't see myself using something like that at home, so it'll be a pass for me, but this is all based on speculation.

Bump for a 2nd article from the Financial Times, mentioning it'll be to the Kindle what color TV was to black & white TV, and that Apple is planning on it being a movie/gaming platform.

I think they'll actually be very successful with this tactic, I can't stand to watch a movie on a 4" screen, it can be done, but why?

It will be a fusion of tech like the iPhone & iPod/iTouch, making already viable technology dirt simple and in an attractive form factor.

I seriously doubt this. e-paper has very specific advantages over LCD technology: you don't need power to display it (just change it) and it can easily be viewed when front-lit. A LCD device would never come close to the Kindle's power usage and readability.

I was originally skeptical of any idea related to an Apple Tablet because I didn't think it would work.

Then I realized you could get a kick-stand type thing, put it on your desk and use the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse and effectively have a desktop with docked. That at least makes some sense.

But, I doubt these reports on it being ARM and a full OS X install. What would be the point of a full OS X install if no applications out there worked? Everyone just switched to Universal Binaries / Intel-only coding.
Either it will be an x86 processor with full OS X, or ARM with some dumbed-down App Store thing.

Sounds like a gimmicky product. Paying $800 or $500+phone plan to watch movies and play retarded cell phone games? Seriously?

See that's what I thought. Gimmicky - not really useful.

Hell, I'm more interested in Microsoft's hand-held portable gaming machine than this thing. By far. And I'm not even that interested.

An old story, but worth posting:

"There's something I keep hearing, and I don't think I'd rank it as high as a rumor, but it's an interesting story that I keep hearing, that for awhile, trucks loaded with books would arrive at a loading dock on the Apple campus, and offload big, big, big, big, huge load of books, and then the trucks would leave empty. And Apple does not have a 100,000-book employee library there on the Apple campus," Ihnatko said. "So one is prone to believe that they're doing something with these books, such as turning them into text for some purpose we can only guess at. There's been a long-standing rumor that Apple has been silently preparing to open a bookstore on the iTunes store, and they want to make sure that they have a very large stock of electronic titles when they do open.

lol, interesting but the guy saying that it doesn't even reach the level of a rumor makes me dubious. If they were doing it, I guess it would allow them to share less of the pie, otherwise it would make a lot more sense to piggy-back on existing digitization efforts (be it Google's, Barnes and Noble, etc).

I'm curious. I hope it will be much more than just a giant iPhone/tablet. That would be boring. If anyone can pull this off and make an exciting device, it's Apple. I guess we'll find out soon...

I would think most (all) e-books are provided by the publisher in a digital format.

Unless those truckloads of books are all in the public domain.

LOL, what have we here?

Amusing, but Jen-Hsun Huang wouldn't be carrying around an Apple tablet. Steve would drop his company like a hot potato. That's no doubt a tablet from someone else.
