It was the Chinese government that attacked Gmail some months back

Aren't companies supposed to have a China Plus One strategy? If the Chinese really become a problem, we can make our crap elsewhere.

but what does that have to do with a political response or anything else on this front?

You know who runs the government, yes? It's this little fairy-tale land called Congress. Inside of it, are these politicians. They vote on such things as warfare, response, and... most importantly, funding for the various departments with lengthy names.

Everything in regards to interacting with other countries is mediated in some fashion through politics. Not sure what politics wouldn't have to do with this, considering this is a State-sponsored attack on property located within the U.S.A.

Sorry if my previous post confused in some way, and any others... but if you considered it some kind of partisan bullshit, get over yourselves already. Not everything in political opinion has to do with "OMG This Party Is Awesome, That Party Sucks Ass!". Well I take that back, both the Democrat and Republican parties are fucking terrible. But I digress. It was not a partisan statement, rather an observed classical trait Democrats have always been known for. And, where my opinion comes into play, I do not believe they take cyber security seriously.
It doesn't matter if the location [of the victim] of a cyber attack is Government property. An attack on U.S. soil and U.S. interests deserves a U.S. response. Especially in signal security, considering that will be the New Wave of Terrorism, both state-sponsored and from radical groups. The psychological precedent is being set this decade regardless of the results. A State commits cyber terrorism, and is met with no political response, that can create a convincing issue that well... they'll get what they want without having to worry about the results.

Oh, and if my Democrat statement somehow makes someone assume that means I believe the Republican response would be better, think again. Frankly, while historically Conservatives have been less informed on technology, this may be false ideologies.

Hopefully someone in the DHS is looking at these things very carefully. This is Terrorism no matter how you slice it. Just because the communications hardware victimized on our side of the ocean wasn't government property, doesn't change the situation. When radical terrorists blow their asses up inside a corporate headquarters, would you think that as anything other than terrorism if their affiliations were clear?
And hell, if it's State-sponsored or worse, committed by the State itself, terrorism is no longer a fit description; that would be an act of war.

Well we could choose Mexico. Wait, that place is all sorts of fucked up too, but at least they don't attack us. Unless the illegal aliens are actually part of a century-long Zerg Rush and they'll all turn... nah... could??? nah...

Taiwan is still friendly, but obviously China would love nothing else than to take them over. South Korea works, but then again... they have a small land mass and a small labor po--- small population.

Japan? Too costly.

What are we to do?! Make this shit our selves?! What, and turn again the Capitalist Way? Why do you hate America so?

😛

India. Soon, they'll have more people than China, making them cheaper. Vietnam, Indonesia, Phillipines, Thailand, South Africa...

cyber attacking of Gmail just China gov try to oversee on the account of Chinese citizen whom deal with democracy. on the other side...actually there is not all people in China think democracy is most important, earn money and no hungery at first.....freedom and democracy need balance with social stable. That's why Chinese gov can exist. “Existence in possible”---Hegel, whatever you love or hate.

Fuck that shit.

Everyone in America will jump up and down together. The shockwave will travel straight through the earth and knock all the Chinese computers off their desks and onto the floor.

And this time, we won't miss.
if Chinese do this same action, okey even America fat twice than Chinese, there only 300 million here...

No really, that is nothing more than sensationalist journalism.

"Cutting off search and e-mail would be as serious as blockading oil to a nation."

Are you kidding me? Google isn't even the #1 search engine in China. You're not going to affect corporate email or shut down Government/Corporate businesses because they can't search for something or access their personal google email account. They will simply move on to something else.

It will obviously hurt google more long term to lose access to China's manufacturing and technology if they piss off China, than it will China losing search and Gmail.

This is the one time when "liberals" SHOULD have the solution, considering their supposed to be known for keeping up with science and technology.
But their still a bunch of passive pussies who aren't going to have the balls to take any political action against China, because they are going to look at cyber-warfare as something akin to one big joke. They won't take cyber-threats seriously.

Oddly enough, it's one of my main areas I would thoroughly as a career for the government - signal security.

They will cry the loudest when their favorite Apple gets hacked into ruin by the Chinese government. Oh, and when their power gets shut off, air traffic control grinds to a halt, cell phones stop working, etc.

I work INFOSEC for the military, I take my job seriously. The threat is there, I respect it.

i was just wondering how greater technological awareness would be useful in responding to this crisis. Based on your response, it really isn't.

Actually, STRATCOM is now responsible within the military for cyberspace. Things like this are being taken seriously inside military circles.

The corporate sector still tends award large bonuses for upper management over information security spending. Security rarely makes money for a company.

personally, i think china will do fine without google. they're on the verge of their own silicon valley 2.0 and there's a million search sites just looking to take over.
