IT blocks all kinds of stuff, some with no apparent reason. For example, theonion is blocked, as is are all the common web based e-mail services. Now they've blocked distributed.net.

Babble, babble, babble...

I AM working, though. I spend a lot of time sitting between calls, waiting for reboots, etc. They know we surf, it's expected.

Where do you think I post from all day?

Not that I know of...

They block stuff by words, though. If a link includes "babe," "sex," "nude," "mp3," or other such keywords, the link will get blocked. They also block names of particular stars. I don't mind that so much, but why distributed.net? Or why Hotmail or Yahoo! mail?

Doesn't make any sense to me.

Viper,

One possible explanation for dnet would be that they're worried some might want to start cracking on the systems. I don't know, seems a bit silly to me.

I'm lucky, my employer doesn't block anything.

Is it possible that they just look at the list of most-visited sites to decide what to block? Maybe there's too many hits on dnet.

Believe me, I've tried cracking on my system. I figured if I only ran it while I was working on the box, it wouldn't be a big deal. It doesn't work, because of the firewall we're behind.

So there's no real point in blocking it.

That really sucks dude. I feel for ya. Luckily, there isn't any blocking done at my place of work. I don't do much personal surfing, only hit some of the mainstream news sites or check my email.

Viper, you don't have to be connected to the net at all to have your machine cracking, so don't worry about a firewall. Use the flush/fetch by email method.

I don't know if you have access to email there or not, but if you don't, here's how you do it. Go home and write some emails to fetch@distributed.net. No subject. In the body of the email, just put the block size you want, and the number of work units.

For example, you could put this in the body of the email:
blocksize=33
numblocks=500

Send that off, and a few minutes later you will get a little file sent back to containing a bunch of 'work' for your little box to do. Import the work into the cracking client, and voila, let'r crack away. Continue doing this a few times until you've accumlated some work units. Then, take the buffer_out.rc5 file from the pc, take it on a disk, and mail it to flush@distributed.net. That's it! Hope that makes sense :)

As for the surfing problem, you can do a few things. How about going to 'thecloak.com', and using their cloaking system? That way, the employer can't have a clue as to what you do or where you go -- the only thing they see is you going to thecloak.com. If they don't like that though, there's very little you can do, short of using one of various proxy's on the net.

Just checked at the surfwatch site - it says www.distributed.net is NOT currently blocked by their filters. So it must be your IT guys doing it. Hard to understand why, though, if the firewall is blocking it for crackers. Why would they even have known about the site to block it in the first place? Weird.

And to back up tagej's point, I used the method he described for weeks and it works just fine. I switched to a pproxy, though.

It's probably blocked for reasonable reasons.

I mean, you're doing something that could potentially make you money with company owned hardware. If you printed out flyers for your side business using work printers I'm sure they'd feel just as pissed at you.
