well, i know there were notable chips before. what i really meant by the statement is that before you were able to get a chip close to or a little above top of the line, but now with conroe, you start above what was top of the line a few moments ago and go even further. the 1800, the celly 300, were all below top of the line. conroe has above top of the line performance for what the mainstream chips are selling for now.

What about when the K8 line first debuted? :)
It seems to coincide with a large architectural change. I'm predicting the same bump with AMD's K8L, and also when Intel introduces their new arch in 2 years.

E6300 seems to beat the X2 4800+ in some/many applications. Therefore I don't see the need for shelling out more $$$ for a E6600; I personally don't need a lot of processing power.

I will be building a new machine from scratch - no legacy parts to carry over - so if in the end a fully-configured E6300 system costs me $1000, maybe I will spring for a E6600 if it is, say, $1150. Depends...I really don't know now.

Im waiting till around Christmas time to start ordering a new pc, and I'll prolly use the e6300 or the cheapest one with a pretty large cache. Also price cuts all round! :D

I hate to contribute to these pointless arguments...but I will do it because I can't help it. Have you been around the web and seen tech sites post articles like: "OMGWTFBBQ, ~$350 E6600 beats $1,200 FX-62 in Preliminary Testing!" Look around, you will find them.

THAT is why it is god-awfully lame to see someone play the AMD has best Bang-for-the-Buck card every time a Conroe discussion comes up.

Seriously.

I'm an AMD fan, but just look at the upcoming Intel prices.
$190 E6300 that rivals mid to high-end X2's, $90 805, etc.
