:frown::(

This morning I woke up and my best friend in the whole world (my dog) could barely move, but he managed to stand up and greet me with a wag of his tail and a paw shake like his usual morning greeting, but something was amiss inhis eyes, the happy go lucky look that is normally there. This morning I saw a look that was imploring me to help him, I saw pain, but I also saw love and devotion in his eyes.

He has been suffering from megaesophagus, which is an exteme enlargement of the throat. It had become so extreme that he was not breathing properly, as well as no food or water was getting into his system.

So the wife, son and I took Chance to a very good vet this morning and said our goodbyes. He was 14 years old, and lived a very comfortable life here at our home. He always had good food to eat, fresh water, and a soft bed. And he returned love, devotion, and protection without question. He is now with God in Heaven. The worst part is, that my 2 year old son could not grasp why Chance was not coming home. he cried all the way to the car and kept assking "Chance come home, Chance come home." I cried like a baby on the Dr.'s shoulder, as well as on my wife's. She has bawled her eyes out as well today.

Well, we all know that all dogs go to heaven, and this is good because today at around 6 pm my grandfather passed away as well. He has been suffering with lung problems. But now he is at peace. This man served as a belly gunner in WWII, built his own house, worked in a steel mill, raised 3 kids, built furniture after retiring, and never asked for anything except the respect an honest man deserves.

So now, while Chance is in heaven waiting on me to get there, he will at least have family there to keep him company. I can see Chance sitting there waiting patiently with ears perked up and tail wagging, and Papaw Cotton walks up and says "Well hello Chance, lets take a walk, and they do.

There is a lump in my throat as I type this, as well as an emptiness in my heart, make that 2 empty spots. I kno that time will heal all pain, but damn, this hurts really bad today.

This is for Chance, my beloved friend and confidant.

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world?s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

**UPDATE**
Well, we buried a great man this Saturday. As quiet as he was, you would have never have thought this man had a lot of friends, but when we we accepting visitors at the viewing, the people just kept showing up. I found out a lot of things about him, many of them did not surprise me, some did. But all in all, he was man who was loved and well respected in his community.

I don't pray, but I'm going to say one tonight for you. I wish you and your family the best.

Aww :( Getting a puppy of the same kind of dog helps a lot. I was in a similar situation over 10 yrs ago...hard to believe the dog we got is already going on 12 yrs old.

Another one for my friend:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Poor doggy. Just remember that you gave him a good life and he enriched yours. Getting another one is not a bad idea, when you're ready.

Again

An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate in the fence and looked in, it was nice grassy, woody areas, just what a 'huntin' dog and man would like, but, it had a sign saying 'no trespassing' so they walked on. They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven" he said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him. The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed, I'm sorry but he can't come with you."

"What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs? If he can't come in, then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life, I can't desert him now."

"Suit yourself, but I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his area, he'll promise you anything, but the dog can't go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll spend Eternity on this road."

So the old man and dog went on. They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. "S'cuse me Sir, my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?"

"Of course, there's some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable"

"You're sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed anywhere."

"Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?"

"No sir, that's why I didn't go to Heaven, he said the dog couldn't come in.
We'll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too, and that's final."

The man smiled a big smile and said "Welcome to Heaven."

"You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that fellow down the road said they weren't?"

"That was the Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life long companion for a comfortable place to stay. They soon find out their mistake, but then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"
