I agree it is an Issue. It still isn't a right. If the boss says you have to be in the office to work then their it is. Don't like it you are free to quit.

I'm not getting into the Union issue can of worms. But I guess they can form a union and press Musk to bend to their desires.
Workers are free to make demands, and if the employer doesn't agree, yeah they can quit. Just don't complain about worker shortages afterward.

None of that makes it a 'woke demand', and it still shouldn't be something that riles you up. Why the fuck do you care where jimbob in idaho works? Is it because you were told you should care?

I'm not riled up, why do you think I am? I also don't care where Jimbob works. Why do you care and posting in this thread? Are you all riled up? Why do you care how Musk runs his company? He didn't do anything illegal based on what we know so far. They reduced manpower and a few happened to be Gay. And from the article they weren't even very senior employees 4 to 5 years.

Simply stating that there's some woke demands coming out of workers (not specifically Tesla workers mind you, just workers), then throwing out 'demanding remote work' as an example when pressed, sounds a whole lot like you have some very specific opinions about this topic.

I'm not being obtuse, and working from home is something I hear from employees across the political spectrum so I don't think that is a "woke demand".

No the OP started the negative remarks with the Assumption that Musk was firing the Gays.... Based on an article where only two were were terminated.

We are talking about Tesla not other companies so my reference to workers was about Tesla employees.

Musk made comments about how employees had to work 40 hours a week in the office and he would allow exceptions for a few exceptional workers on a case basis. I do have specific feelings about WFH in a manufacturing environment. This has nothing to do with my political beliefs. It has everything to do with my 29 years working in a manufacturing environment.

WFH is not a right, but can be negotiated with the employer on a case by case basis. In a fast paced manufacturing environment where a breakdown of equipment can mean the loss of thousands of dollars per hour or more they need to have engineering and programming support on site. Granted many office workers are not needed on site all the time. It is however frustrating for many workers when they attempt to work with HR etc and have to do it remotely. Before I retired this year they had a rotation of engineers, office workers on site every day and that allowed some to work from home. This was negotiated between employees and management in a non-union company during the Covid 19 pandemic.

I guess you get riled up quite often. Maybe you should get some soothing chamomile tea.

Great, so where in this actually well defined and written post is anything regarding a 'woke demand', again? Or was that just inflammatory language for no good reason?

that's not the relevant question. The relievent question is how many know gays work for Tesla, and how many are part of the layoff? If it's only 1% of the 500, but the majority or 100% of the gays who work(ed) at Tesla what does that say? Considering we already know that two of them are high profile in the LBGTQ says lot already.

Demand and supply… Musk will soon find that if he wants to fill positions, there will be a demand about working from home, if he filters that set of potential employees out, he is not getting the best talent and thus the dominos start tumbling down to the product he is producing. It is what it is.

Also, covid season is only so far out and a new sub variant of Omicron is already putting a little pressure on even in the summer time.

As far as his tech folks go, I have to say, he's going to lose that battle. People in those roles will have ample opportunities elsewhere if they desire WFH and a Musk demand will cause them to leave or not come in.
