im running win2k pro. well, i had it installed obly 2 months running my IIS webserver. 2 days ago i got code red in my system. i dont know how it got in, i had norton running latest definition files and blackice latest update, all the microsoft updates installed too. well, i thought it was funny at first. but not anymore...my computer has been giving me errors or random reboots...:'( it aint funny anymore, i heard linux was better, so i downloaded and burned mandrake 8.2 what im asking is any tips to me? this is the first time using linux besides last time, i was so confused. i got into a windowsish UI but everything was different. it had none of that C:\ stuff, and i didnt know how to install any programs. also, what programs should i download on linux to replace my existing ones (winamp, ms office, media player, nero etc...)thanks. and will it work with my radeon 8500, audigy, athlon...etc.? thanks

ps. my 999th post! last post before hitting quadruple digits! woohoo!

Apache for win32 isnt as good as the unix version but its ALOT better than iis, I'm running apache on an nt4 machine here and perfectly stable without any problems, I used to run it on win2k and on winxp without problems also. The only problem with apache is that its kinda hard to configure, but its easy to get help for that, it IS the internet :)

I would suggest learning how to configure a server before you attempt to run server services.

Your probably going to have problems with your Audigy because there aren't any official drivers out yet. That is the only problem I have with Linux. I posted about it a couple of weeks ago but I still haven't figured out how to install drivers for anything yet. I heard the Live drivers might work for it. But someone linked to a site that had beta "third party" (for lack of a better term) drivers. I downloaded them but I don't know how to compile or install them. Anyway, until I have sound I refuse to use Linux.

Better yet, get off the web. You're probably one of the thousands of code red/sircam/code blue, etc. attempts in my server logs.

<< well, i thought it was funny at first >>

Not real funny for all the sysadmins who have to deal with your stupidity in the form of traffic congestion and hack attempts.

if you kept win2k pro updated, then you wouldn't need to worry about code red :p

grab a cheap 486 DX 33 and run bsd/linux on that for a webserver. Cool, consumes little power, stable, and it lets you shut down your big honking rig at night so you can sleep without dreaming about a big black monster who sounds and resembles a 7000 rpm delta fan. low end web serving can be run on just about anything it seems. I've run tiny on a p90 without trouble.

Some of you guys are frigging hard on the guy. The best way to learn is to try - how is a person supposed to learn these things without trying? Sure he can read in a book, but how crappy is that for 100% of your resource base?

hey look, im sorry, its not like im looking to host the code red virus. i run security programs and keep with all the updates. thats why im going to install linux and hopefully that will stop all that.

anyway, i used a win ME boot disk to get into command prompt with CD support. when i try to read my CD1 of mandrake 8.2, it gives me an error and says the CD is not in a high sierra or valid ISO mode. i try my other 2 disks, and they both work. is my first CD burned bad? i burned it yesterday and i just ran checksum on it. there are no problems. so should i reburn it? thnx. also, can i start the linux install in windows? or do i have to go boot disk to do it?

please chill out, and i know blackice isnt the best, i switched to zonealarm pro. i gotta burn this cd again, its only 40% and a 4x burner sucks.

Don't appologize - a couple of the "experts" here forget what it's like to start out on things. Don't you wish you could have known what to do right from the get go? God, to be so cool as them!

thats a good idea actually, i have a 486....and a 286 that nobody uses anymore. think thatll work for a simple web server? it probably will, because it doesnt have to do much...and cgi scripts dont take much either. i might actually do it on a cheap laptop of something, because it takes so little power and is quiet...run it off a external HD or something.

You might have problems with the Audigey (sp) and Radeon 8500 and linux (not sure about the 8500. I have a 7500 and it works well). I would get another machine to do the serving. Something that has nown supported hardware. There are front ends for the appache server that helps set it up in linux. I forgot what they are called since i don't use any servers. After you install Apache you might be able to use webmin to administer it.

Mandrake might not run on a 486 since it is compiled/optimised to run on a 586. I just installed Mandrake 8.2 on my rig and it is sweet.

Try looking in the Mandrake usenet group. Also there are linux networking news groups and I bet this question gets asked all the time. There are also online resources like www.linuxdoc.org www.linuxlinks.com and a bunch of others.

Good luck with all of it.

just remember...no GUI(as in windows/x windows/kde/gnome) and no encryption/decryption as that WILL hurt the server. I also hear that running DOS and an older build of Xitami is very stable as well. Besides, I think you learn more from not using a GUI

There is a non-pentium optimized version of mandrake you can dl(99% sure). or, you could always recompile the kernel to the latest one, with the improved tcp/ip and improved VM.
