Belgium to recognise Palestinian statehood, impose sanctions on Israel
FM Maxime Prevot says his country will recognise Palestine this month and impose 12 'firm sanctions' on Israel.www.aljazeera.com
some more recognition of Palestine
The last government made a lot of big statements, but did exactly nothing for the last 2 years. The new government is led by right-wing flemish nationalists who are vehemently pro-israel. however, they're in a coalition with both the social democrats and the christian democrats, who were having real problems defending the government's inaction to their base. so after months of obstructions and delays, they finally voted a gaza bill ... and it's a whole bunch of nothing:
- an economic import ban for goods produced in occupied territories (not actually law yet)
- extra humanitarian aid
- calling for a UN peacekeeping force to distribute said aid
- sanctions against violent israeli settlers (heard that one before), as well as, of course, leaders of hamas
- banning ben-gvir, smotrich and all leaders of Hamas from entering Belgium (which they never did before anyway)
- limiting but not stopping the work of the flemish investment & trade office in israel
- calling for a european weapons embargo and a partial suspension of the european-israeli association agreement
- making the existing belgian weapons embargo a bit more strict - no word on actually enforcing it, as it's been ignored the past two years
- recognising a palestinian state... when every hostage is released and hamas is no longer in power
a lot of symbolic nonsense bullshit
bibi however, did not like that one bit
