There is some rough stuff. Looks like Israeli civilians executed in a number of the raids. Some Israeli women taken hostage by Hamas and taken back to Gaza. The effort really appears to be geared to generating maximum outrage in Israel.

Hamas just likes violence against Israelis regardless of their prospects for gain. I'm not a particular fan of the Israeli government here either though since you could certainly say the similar about some of them. I have little doubt that this was largely orchestrated and supported by Iran though with at least Russian knowledge if not direct involvement.

Given how Israeli intelligence sources were purportedly among the world's finest, and given how this whole disaster is largely to Netanyahu's benefit, I wonder what the chances are that Netanyahu purposely let Israel's defenses lax, giving Hamas a green light to set off what they had already geared up for and was merely waiting for an opportune time to launch their attacks.

Given how Netanyahu had let the world know his intent to create an authoritarian form of gov't, everything is going his way at the moment.

He could also be easily blamed for being asleep at the wheel and more concerned with doing the bidding of conservative elements he needs to maintain power than state security. I mean he's in power already but apparently failed to detect, avert, or respond to the attack in an efficient manner. I think that he needs more power to do his job badly might be a tough sell.

Who is "they"?
Cause Hamas launching total war is certainly responsible for this escalation.
Both sides only had small scale conflict recently until this assault.

Given Bibi's almost singular concern with the maintenance of his own position and that he has largely surrounded himself with people who don't know what they are doing I don't think we can rule out incompetence.

Hmm. We don't know if it is or not unless we can pull up the bookkeeping for it and I don't have access to that. Iran says they'll do whatever they want with it. We say it's going to be regulated. The truth is probably in the middle somewhere. If I had to pick who to believe it's the Iranians on this one, I find it safe to assume they're masters at laundering by necessity of being a rogue state. I could be wrong.

edit: Considering this attack was on a big 'anniversary' I suspect it was going to happen no matter what.

Hamas truly does want a pile of their own corpses so they can cry at the world.
Worst of all, it is going to be effective. Killing your own people is good diplomacy at the UN. Sigh....

This entangled land issue is BS. Israel needs to GTFO out of the west bank. Borders declared, borders sealed between warring parties.

Fact is, Iran has a history of doing this, so why would we think they didn't fund this with money, weapons, technology, intel and more?

None of what I've seen, while terrible, makes me think this was somehow a super expensive operation. They caught the Israelis flat footed and focused on their own internal problems.
