JERUSALEM ? Lebanese militants fired barrages of rockets into northern Israel early Thursday, striking a nursing home and threatening to open a second front for the Jewish state as it pushed forward with its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Two people were injured, and the rockets on Israel's north raised the specter of renewed hostilities with Hezbollah, just 2 1/2 years after Israel battled the guerrilla group to a 34-day stalemate. Hezbollah started the 2006 war as Israel was battling Palestinian militants in Gaza.

In new Gaza fighting, Israel killed at five people, including four militants, raising the death toll from its 13-day offensive to nearly 700, according to Palestinian medical officials. With roughly half the dead believed to be civilians, international efforts to broker a cease-fire have been gaining steam.

One of the Lebanese rockets went through the roof of a Nahariya retirement home and exploded in the kitchen as about 25 elderly residents were eating breakfast in the adjacent dining hall. One resident suffered a broken leg, another bruises, apparently from slipping on the floor after emergency sprinklers came on.

"The rocket entered through the roof, hurling the water heaters into the air. It went through bedrooms upstairs and then into the kitchen. There was a serious blast," said Henry Carmelli, the home's manager.

A second rocket barrage later struck northern Israel, though no injuries were immediately reported, Israeli radio and television stations reported.

Israel has repeatedly said it was prepared for a possible attack on the north since it launched its bruising campaign against Hamas militants in Gaza on Dec. 27. Israel has mobilized thousands of reserve troops for such a scenario, and leaders have warned Hezbollah of dire consequences if it enters the fighting.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the rocket barrage from Lebanon. A Lebanese government official said that his country was trying to determine who was responsible and that Lebanon is committed to a U.N.-brokered truce that ended the 2006 war.

Why are people who disapprove of the "we are civilized and morally superior" Israeli bombing campaign labeled as "Israeli Haters"?? Is that some way for you to discredit everything they say?

How many Lebanese did Israel kill last year?

Why have there been a few days now with no body counts in Gaza - how many have they killed so far.. all guilty.. right? or at least a super high percentage.. and don't start with the "they voted for them" .. How many people voted? Did all who voted vote for them? Stop skewing reality so often

Are these maps really true? I mean.. how much land has been taken from Palestinians

Some of it is true (like the first quote), some of it was said in past times and is irrelevant today, and some plainly wrong. You can't debate the bloodthirst of Arabs. Just look at Iraq.

The funny thing is that Syria and Jordan probably killed more Palestinians than Israel!

Edit - LOL, I nearly fell into the trap. What on earth does it have to do with the fact that now Lebanon, a sovereign country, is unprovokinged shooting rockets into Israel?

Hopefully Israel can finish the job this time and wipe out Hamas, so they wont have to go back in again. I find it funny how people are trying to defend all the Palestinian people like they are all harmless peace loving people. If Mexico was firing unprovoked rockets over and over each day at U.S. cities you better believe we would retaliate until it stopped.

Imagine that. These international forces were supposed to prevent this, instead, they inevitably shielded terrorists from Israeli attack while ignoring the terrorists? moves to rearm. And rearm they did. Same thing will happen in Gaza should Israel be stupid enough to agree to a seize fire whereby foreign powers move in to oversee Gaza?s borders with Israel and Egypt.

I have a question, don't the Born Agains supports the Israelis against the Arabs because they want them to survive so God can slaughter them on Judgment Day?

Not PC, but I imagine I'd say some of the similar things if in their shoes. I have referred to various savages from parts of the world as clothed apes, or animals--even worse, some of what humans can do is so despicable it wouldn't even be in a quentin tarantino film. As an elected official I'm not sure I would, but if I've had a family member killed by somebody who bombed a cafe and had his kids being babysat by that jihadist mickey mouse show they had it would be a natural inclination to demonize them like this.

You can't kill an ideology.

500,000 people marched when Yassin was murdered by the Israelis, you just can't stop that.

Israel is doing the same strategy as we did in Iraq. You can't bomb your way out of this problem. What changed in Iraq was that we recognized that some people are legitimately fighting the US while others are "true Al Qaeda." We engaged those that had a legitimate grievance, worked with them and marginalized the Al Qaeda elements. It helped to bring a lot of stability to that region in just a year or so.

Israel needs to make it's own introspection like we did and pursue an alternative plan because this one simply hasn't been working.

Wow; The Palestinians to you are kind of like Obama is to Jpeyton. Maybe you should go fight with them and use woman and children as your shield.

And that website is not a credible source of anything.

I have to compliment the OP on this post, JEDIYoda, for referring to those firing missiles from Lebanese soil as Lebanese militants rather than blindly assuming Hezbollah. In short, we do not know yet, and the fact is that a wide variety of different groups with different goals are operating in the entire mid-east.

And sadly, on all sides, there is an all too great of a potential for false flag attacks, that may invite retaliation on groups that are entirely innocent. As rocket technology delivers longer ranges, the false flag danger will increase exponentially.

Yah, it was probably either the KKK or Israel did it to itself.

What a moran.

People who are critical of the killing of hundreds of innocents are now "Israel haters"? Any credibility your post had ended right there.

I would say those who are incapable of criticizing palestine at all (like dahunan) are Israel haters and probably anti-semetic. I would say the same is true of those who are incapable of criticizing palestine.

In the US, there are far far fewer people who will take an anti-Israel stance than those who will take a pro-Israel stance no matter what.

I see both sides as equally at fault for the situation. They've been doing "an eye for an eye" for so long that both sides are blind and just keep retaliating for what the other side does without ever actually stopping to think of what can be done to actually move in a positive direction. In fact, it's been going on for so long that I doubt there are very many Israeli's or Palestinians that can even begin to objectively look at the situation.

I would say those who are incapable of criticizing palestine at all (like dahunan) are Israel haters and probably anti-semetic. I would say the same is true of those who are incapable of criticizing palestine.

I would very much dispute that. The history of the creation of Israel leaves the door open for a lot of harsh criticism that has nothing to do with being an anti-Semite. There is one very defensible position that Jews had no business taking over Palestine, and from that position it becomes very difficult to criticize Palestinians.
