Isopropyl Alcohol

It's amazing.

I'm pretty sure it's the best cleaner there is. It literally cleans everything off of anything. Not to mention, there is no easier way to get drunk off of a dollar. (I've never tried it, I hear it has an amazing hang over, normally followed by death)

According to the MSDS for 90-100% pure isopropyl alcohol, the lethal dose is 8oz. Probably not a good thing to tinker with. 😉

Huh, interesting stuff too:
Boiling point is 180°F (82°C), and its melting point is -128°F (-89°C).

Purity must be regulated by state. I'm in Pennsylvania, and I've only ever seen it as high as 91% pure, with 70% being the norm.

Good to know! I've only ever used it for cleaing CPUs and heatsinks. I have always resorted to my large bottle of lighter fluid for my Zippos to clean gunk and goo off of other materials.

I use the 76% stuff.

yea the 99% stuff is great for cleaning

i dont recomend drinking it unless you want to kill yourself

Isopropyl alcohol is EXTREMELY toxic!!!!!
Sue the OP if you drink and die.

Anyways here in TX we have 91% and I think 99% too. It is decent at degreasing (when you need to remove oils from surfaces before gluing them together), but paint thinner works better IMO.

I use my 70% stuff to burn papers in the sink. I use my 91% stuff to clean components. I don't have anything higher than 91% on hand, nor have I looked for higher purity. Usually 91% gets the job done.

Silly boy.

anyhoo, the print heads in my inkjet have become clogged, and the replacement heads are ridiculously expensive for this older model (Canon i960) I'm going to try the isopropyl + EtOH into empty ink cartridge, run head cleaning tool.

anyone have success with this?

You can get 99% in same places as 91% and 70%...
BTW I do not think 99.9% is stable, it will absorb water from air and become less. Probably same applies to 99% and even 91%?

Another danger is that (reportedly) isopropyl tastes exactly like ethyl (regular), so you won't even notice that you are drinking poison.

Acetone is better.

yeah acetone is awesome!

but make sure you wear gloves while handling concentrated acetone, since your skin does absorb some. too much acetone is killer on your liver and kidneys!

Yes it will absorb water from the air, though at a lower speed than high strength ethanol.

Um, the Iso Alcohol sucks for cleaning really sticky stuff. It will not get that stuff off. WD40 works well though. 😛 Just spray some of that on, wait a few seconds... Wipe. All sticky stuff gone. O_O It worked good for getting the sticker residue off my mothers laptop. (Laptop still workz!) Isopropyl alcohol didn't do the job there.

I like Goo Gone for sticky residue, but we also keep a bottle of 91% Isopropyl around for cleaning up oily things.

Walgreens sells 91%, but I haven't ever seen 99% outside of a chemistry supply catalog.
