you should split the poll into two polls, same question , but one for network (broadcast/whatever) and the other for "cable" channels

network TV sucks, cable/"off brand" channels ROCK

NCIS (Cote de Pablo. Mmmmmmmm.)
The Unit
Sleeper Cell
Dr Who (When does the next season start already?)
L&O SVU (Wish they'd let Stabler bang the hot Danish chick)

They should have been a little more original and not ripped off Chloe Sullivan from Smallville

My GF watches lots of TV. I've tried to watch Lost and Heroes but I can't sit still that long for these shows. I don't like them because the plots are so out there and ridiculous. Also they don't seem to be able to answer anything in an episode without only giving very vague answers and only bring up more "questions". I hate that.
To be fair, Heroes brings questions over from week to week, but they also ANSWER a lot every episode. They reveal little things every episode. Lost, on the other hand, nearly lost me as a viewer because of this exact issue. You never learned ANYTHING, you just had more questions after every episode. They are finally supposed to be wrapping this up, and if they don't, I'm done.
I guess I'm a product of Early 80's TV. I can sit down and watch Knight Rider, A-Team, Star Trek, shows that have a theme to it, but the whole plot is drug out slowly over an entire season or series. I like for each episode to be contained. I know why shows like 24, Lost, and Heroes where made the way they are. It's so you buy the DVDs because you have to watch them in order to understand the show.
I can understand this. Single-serve TV. I think the big change here is the DVR. Writers are able to stretch things out more because between those people who will watch a given show every single week and those with a DVR, you have a pretty good fan base that won't miss an episode.
I think the last show that was on that I liked was Firefly. It had a overall plot that was followed through the series, but each episode stood on it's own.
I didn't watch that at first, but after watching Serenity I've seen some episodes of the show (inHD replays it) and I think I was missing something good.

i disagree. tv right now is actually slacking compared to last year at this time

monday - prison break and 24 both lost their touch and both aren't that exciting anymore

seriously ... have you seen all the previous seasons of 24? so far this season is by FAR the worst season. it is just so ridiculously over the top with the same old rehashed story in a somewhat different form.

the first 2 nights of 24 were badass, but from then on it's just been down hill. i still watch it and am entertained, but it is nowhere as excited and unpredicitable as it was a few seasons back.

My GF really likes NCIS, and I really like Abby, so I don't mind watching that one.

fixed, give me a Seinfeld re-run I've seen 5 times already over a new episode of The Office ANY day. God I hate television programming as of late, no offense to the people who actually like these shows but other then a handful of HBO programs it's a very underwhelming line-up to me.

Seinfeld is just awful to me. Everyone I know with seemingly the same sense of humor as me likes it, but I just can't stand it. Boring, stupid, slapstick comedy. Basically I can't stand most sitcom styles, and it is as bad as they come.

There's some brilliant stuff on TV. There are dozens of shows that are far superior to current movie box office leaders like Norbit and "Because I Said So". ANY episode of The Office or My Name is Earl is FAR FAR FAR funnier than dreck like "Epic Movie".

A typical drama series like 24 or Lost is doing 22-24 episodes per year. At about 44 minutes of actual screen time that works out to something close to 18 HOURS per season. Think for a moment about how many big budget movies fail to keep you entertained for 18 minutes let alone for the 90 minute running time after you spent $10 just to get a seat. Anyone that says that movies are where it's at and that TV sucks is a complete fool. Once you get past the reality garbage TV is turing out incredible product week after week after week. Hollywood is not.

How I Met Your Mother is great (Weeds is too). I was the one who made the "tripe" comment, and I was mostly referring to shows like Deal or No Deal (randomly picking numbered suitcases... yeah) and the dozens of reality shows (like a show about which fat person can lose the most weight...). I was voicing my frustration over shows that are actually good being cut down in their prime. Sports Night is a great example. Arrested Development is another. Instead of great shows like those, we get another season of The Apprentice (which I watched for the first few seasons, but it jumped the shark when Trump started doing anything he could to surprise you, i.e. firing 4 people at once).

Frankly, I'm a little gunshy about getting into new shows because every show I like gets canceled.

It's true. I'm not a big TV watcher, but there really is a lot of good TV out there right now.
The latest generation of TV shows have a nice gritty somewhat realistic feel to them, a complete lack of campiness or corniness, and utilize an excellent episode-after-episode format of plot and character development (as opposed to the traditional way of encapsulating the plot of each episode into itself).

I think there are a lot of good 1 hour dramas out there, but I'm sad that there are very few good 1/2 hour sitcoms anymore. I like The Office and 24, but I don't have the time to watch the other 1 hour shows every week. I'd rather catch up on them on dvd or something.

I dunno, when the best news reporting and political analysis/commentary is coming from 2 shows that are in fact pretend news/commentary shows, it's either a sign of a very sick or very healthy media. I'm not sure which. Maybe both.

I so very rarely watch any channel below 23 (hockey). Wife watches House, and I think it's OK because I like acerbic wit, but I'm starting to lose patience with the formula thing (as always).

FireFly, FarScape, Carnivale, Jake 2.0, and others from recently memory have been canned.

I am still angry at HBO over canning Carnivale

That's cool, to each their own. I personally think it's the greatest sitcom/comedy ever made, but I can understand if some people just don't like/get its humor.

please post links that confirm studio 60 is being canceled. i haven't read anything official. if it is canceled it will be a shame because it's one of the best shows on television.
