In NZ, we were the 1st to used EFT-POS systems etc and it was all free. Bank work loads got less and then internet banking come around. Now they charge for every electronic transaction that hits the bank account yet NO input/monitoring is required by bank staff. It if isnt the amount of interest they charge, its the huge amounts of money they make on our use of accounts that allows them to write off millions to 3rd world countries.....whinge whinge....lol.
Its all about revenue generation....

My school's automated registration website was only up 9AM-5PM. I never could figure out the logic behind that one.

We've got something similar here. The site you can go to to pay your bills, check your schedule, register for classes, or do other functions of that nature, is only available 7:30 a.m.-3:00 a.m. eastern time. I guess their webservers are older models that need to get 4.5hrs of sleep a night.😕

Thats because the credit card companies charge the college around 3.5% of the transaction. Why not just pay by check if you want to avoid the credit card charge?

i like that i can pay credit card bills online, and they draft it from my bank account at no charge

but my mortgage holder, citi, charges an extra 10 bucks to pay my mortgage online. nice of them, eh?

Also, I believe that credit card agreements with merchants forbid them from charging a fee to cover the credit card charges.

Exactly what I was reading all the replies to hope to hear.

The stupid thing about this is that if it's like my school, you're better off paying 50 cents because if you pay in person, you have to wait in line for about 40-60 minutes, and if you mail it in... from a college mailbox... even at the mailbox about 200 yards from the office it goes to, they somehow fail to receive it with at least 2 weeks before the due date and charge you $85 for creating a "temporary loan".

All I have to say is "Welcome to college. Nothing is free and despite the fact that the school is making thousands off of you a year, they will still nickle and dime you like cheapasses. Now you know why college students have a reputation for being poor."
