Granted, it will probably swing back over the gulf eventually, and it will probably intensify again once it gets over water-but saying it will be a category 4 or 5 is pure unsupported conjecture. The link above for most current landstrike data indicates a maximum expected windspeed of 75 mph, if I am reading it correctly.
Sounds like the local news media is trying to wipe up a bit of a panic down there.
I posted my thread when Isidore was a cat 4 hurricane and before it stalled over the Yucatan. I have updated the thread as new information comes in. Actually it isn't an overreaction. Have you ever heard of Opal? We really dodged a bullet on that storm. It went from cat1-4 overnight. Had it not weakend some before landfall a catastrophic disaster would have occured.
Windspeed had actually dropped to 40 MPH. I don't rmember anyone saying Isidore would be a cat 4 or 5 once it stalled over the Yucatan. The prediction of a cat 4-5 was made BEFORE it stalled and when it was cat 4 strength.
The intensity forecast for this storm has everyone up in the air. Right now the median forecast is 100MPH winds before it hits NO. It could be much stronger or a little weaker. Depends on how fast it arrives and how much the inner core collapsed(a lot) but this is a massive storm.
You should read the whole thread before posting. Nothing in my posts was "unsupported conjecture." Not only can I read models correctly I also follow and talk to several meterologists daily on a message board. Their forecast and ideas don't deviate much from mine. They actually care for the older models and I like the trantech more... but I digress.
BTW the NHC is saying 85knot winds which is 100MPH.
