Although the babylonians had some idea what 0 must be, it was not until 640 CE that '0' became common. The Indian Mathematician Brahmagupta (648 CE) was the first to prove the mathematical properties of 0. According to my Math book from Clifford A. Pickover.

Brahmagupta's Brahmasphuṭasiddhanta is the first book that provides rules for arithmetic manipulations that apply to zero and to negative numbers.[20] The Brahmasphutasiddhanta is the earliest known text to treat zero as a number in its own right, rather than as simply a placeholder digit in representing another number as was done by the Babylonians or as a symbol for a lack of quantity as was done by Ptolemy and the Romans. In chapter eighteen of his Brahmasphutasiddhanta, Brahmagupta describes operations on negative numbers. He first describes addition and subtraction,

True Facts I made up:

Trying to figure out what 0 is has been the reason for many large disappearance events over the course of Earth's history including Roanoke, Atlantis and the Mayans. It is also believed that early mammals plotted the extinction of the dinosaurs using the bizarre properties of zero.

The result of doing this is not unlike what happens when you add ketchup to a hotdog.
You can divide by zero all the time with limits and such, it's just not going to result in a rational number.

Doing something as disgraceful as putting ketchup on top of a hot dog is immoral as well as irrational and reckless
There are 0 situations where ketchup belongs on hot dogs.

You can divide by zero to calculate the number of situations where ketchup is not among hot dogs.

EDIT: also it's obviously even.

Ketchup on hotdogs is a fine thing. People who object are probably morally deficient.

But, we should maintain the straight and narrow way to determine the nature of zero.

a long time ago, I temporarily disabled error messages on my C64. I then divided by zero. I don't remember what happened after that.

0 is an invention of Aryabhatta.

Before that there was no zero.

Don't like it.. blame Aryabhatta or the Indians. There's a reason they're smart.. they invented math.
