I'm still on a Q9300 OC'd to 3.4, I have my second GTX280 arriving within the next couple of days (Thanks AT FS forums!) and I figure SLI will give my system a decent shot in the arm until I go to and LGA 1366 platform later this year.

I used to build a new computer every 24 months, the last one i built was 5 years ago, and I haven't even turned it on it months, I just use my core 2 laptop, but for Christmas I got a I5 E4310 from work, so I'll start using that I imagine.

Computers tend to be way faster than I need them to, now that I almost strictly use them for business use.

My computer is great. Plenty fast, plays any game I want, ssd goodness, blu ray, etc.. I can't seem to enjoy it cause I feel I wasted my money since all I basically do is surf the Internet on it.

Phenom II X3, 6GB RAM, HD4870 1GB

It wasn't expensive two years ago when I built it and there's really nothing compelling me to upgrade now. I don't buy as many new games as I used to; a lot of what I get are a couple years old and cheap so they're not very demanding.

When I bought the graphics card it was $190. And it still is on par with today's $150 graphics cards. To get a significant performance increase I'd have to spend over $200 and there's just no reason to at all since I've never run into a game that I can't run at 1080p. Most gaming isn't CPU-intensive enough to require a faster CPU than what I have, and I have plenty of RAM.

Really the only things I'm missing out on are DirectX 11 and an SSD. Neither of which is worth shelling out the hundreds of bucks I'd need to. I'll probably wait a couple more years before I need to upgrade again.

Astromanluca I'd have to agree with everything you said except the part about the ssd not being worth a couple hundred bucks. I can not go back to using mechanical drives for the OS. Had laptops with dual core and 4gbs of ram with a ssd feel faster than an i7 930, 6gb triple channel ram, w/ a mechanical drive.

C2D E8400 @ 3.5GHz, 4GB RAM, GTX460 1GB.

I've gradually upgraded the machine over the years. The CPU + mobo I purchased in 2008. I added a Raptor HDD in 2009. This year I boosted the RAM's speed and got the 460 card as a Christmas present. So unless something craps out on me, I don't forsee needing to do much upgrading for another year or two. Like others, an SSD would be the only real boost to performance for me. I'd likely have to do a CPU + mobo + RAM upgrade all at once to see anything significant other than that.

That's what I've heard. I guess I meant for me personally. I can't exactly afford to spend anything on my computer right now especially since it works fine as is. But when I do have the money an SSD will be the first thing on my list.

Wow. Lots of power in this tread. I'm using a 1.2ghz single core ULV laptop. Works for what I need. I could use a little more power but I'm not dying for it.

TBH untill they drop to 1$ per GB they are not worth it IMO, hell even then its questionable

and yes my comp is fast enough, its over a year old and will last 2 more most likely

My P4 3.2 is still alive and kicking, barely, even with upgraded parts throughout the last five years. That and Windows XP is all I need to rule the internets!

For everything else theres the trusty old Sony T7200 laptop.

I just don't care anymore because 99% of new games coming out for PC are ports or multiplatform titles which I have next to no interest in playing, so I pretty much spend all of my time paying old school stuff I missed over the years, or want to replay.

i7 860 @ 4Ghz here with 8gigs of RAM, water cooled with two 6970's in crossfire.. Probably will upgrade to socket 2011 (or Bulldozer depending on how it turns out).

2.5 GHZ Athlon X2, 2 gigs of ram and a HD4750 with windows XP services all my needs nicely. All the games that have come out that require mass amounts of power haven't piqued my interest at all. The only thing that saddens me is how slow Civ V can be, but oh well, it's not worth the cost of upgrading my mobo, processor and RAM for.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, and I don't even have one of the i processors or an SDD. just did a fresh install of win7 and it is running SMOOOOOOOTH.

Mine's fast enough to get the job done, 4gb ram, phenom 2 x4 3ish ghz, 4870, velociraptor

I'll probably build a new system some time this year or the next, mostly because I want a separate box to hook up to my projector downstairs to use both as HTPC and for occasional Gaming...

Totally agree. I put a SSD in my laptop, then I had to have one in my desktop shortly after. I've gotten so spoiled that I upgraded my HTPC and laptop to G2 Intel SSDs and I put the G1 Intel from my laptop into my work laptop.

Pretty happy with my quad core and 4gb memory. May upgrade to 8gb ram later this year.

I don't do anything that necessitates more and since most apps are moving to the web I won't see that changing soon.

I don't game on my computer.

I converted to consoles in '03 and haven't looked back since then. Hell, I'd still be using '03 era AMD 1.something or other CPU if it hadn't died on me in '06. Bought a $400 Dell XPS refurb then and haven't updated a single thing except for a TV tuner.

I game so it must be up to date to a degree. On a quad core, 4GB RAM, and decent ATI 4850. Otherwise, my old PC I gave my parents would generally suffice. I think it's an Athlon 1.3GHz.

It's plenty fast when it gets going. I need to upgrade to an SSD, but as others have said, I'm just too lazy to reinstall Windows right now.

for several years there was always something that i wanted to upgrade next, always something better on the horizon, and i'm pretty good about getting bang for my buck, so i could generally perceive a noticeable difference when upgrading

seems like now the only place that i see a place to upgrade is with my video card, but since i don't really game anymore, i just don't care

now that i'm running an i7 with an SSD and plenty of memory i can't see myself upgrading this rig for several years to come, and i built it almost two years ago...i used to try to replace almost every component after a 3 year lifespan

anyone else in the same boat i am?

Yes, actually - ever since I went to the i7/SSD combo, I've been extremely happy with the setup. Boot is about 10 seconds, ALL apps open instantly, and processing for most of my stuff is very quick. I could always use more power for rendering, encoding, etc., but overall - it feels like using an iPhone or iPad. Does what I want, lickity-split

I've been pretty happy with the processing power vs. OS/apps speed since Quad-cores came out, but it's really been since the SSD's came out (especially Sandforce) that I've felt like I've reached a plateau. Plus, prices on parts are amazing, aside from the still-high SSD prices. For example, I just ordered some parts for my dad's new engineering rig today - it was $190 shipped for 24 gigs of DDR3-1333 memory. That's ridiculous! :D
