Is windows 2000 REALLY worthed ? I am formatting soon !!
I have an Athlon 600 and 196 mb of ram and I usually use win 98 for everything. Now... I just want to know... is win 2000 REALLY THAT good ?? :)

How much % games will run slower (or faster ??!?!) and how much ressources does it use ? Cause I don't want to have 30 zillion OS in my computer !! :) hehe... LInux and win 98 were ok. Now if I add win 2000 I wish to completely change to win 2000 and linux.
THanks !

I made the switch from Win98 to Win2k gradually. In January when I first got Win2k, I was dual booting with Win98 (only b/c of no printer support). But once I got Win2k drivers for my printer, I dropped Win98 like a bad habit and haven't looked back. Win98 sucks d*$k!

Win2k is as fast or faster than Win2k in most games (if you're using 3dfx or nVidia cards) and is a gazillion times more stable.

You couldn't pay me to go back to that hell hole of Win98.

PS: What's worthed?:Q

I wish I was running Win2k... did the dual boot and then Win2k only... my system is sort of old so I ran into a lot of problems. Ended up reformatting 6 times in one day... after going through all kinds of configurations with WinME, Win2k and Win98SE, I finally settled on Win98SE. Will be running a new Win2k computer this winter though, so I can't wait.

Thor_Sevan, your computer should be fine running Win2k. You are formatting anyway, go for it. See how you like it, and if you don't you can always format and go back to Win98.

Make sure you have all the drivers and whatnot ready when you go to install Win2k...

check anand's latest (low-end) video card round up, both 3dfx and nVidia's drivers are as fast in Win2k as in 9X.

When I installed Win2k I had an issue with my ATi TV-Wonder but I think they've released offical drivers for that now.

I'm to lazy to format right now, but next time I do it's win2000 all the way.

I dual booted win98/2000, kept 98 on for games...never used it..it was just a waste of a gig of hard drive space and an extra menu option on my bootloader.

Win2000 is much better.

ok... now... euh... I remmebered having some problems with my G400 and win 98 but I fixed by installing special drives. I have a K7m, G400 max. Now, can you help me fin what I have to install in what order to make win 2000 work at 100 %. Or is win 2000 already properly configured ? Should I still install my modo drivers ?

Thanks

win2k is very good at settting itself up. i had a bit of trouble because i set up my systems myself and had to sometimes force the hardware to do what i wanted, but in my dad's computer, which he bought pre-assembled, and has done little with except switch out a video card and add some ram and a cd-rw, it went in with no problems, and was running perfectly within 2 hours of when we started. hes been running it for at least a few months, and i think i was the only one skilled enough to crash it (during the boot sequence, no less), but it is a great OS once you get it set up properly, and if you have a LAN where you live, you can have the added fun of playing god-like admin of your computer and denying people access to files that they need. its so much fun. upgrade. quickly.

I've been using WIN2k Pro for about 6 weeks now and really like it ... one of the main benefits that I noticed immediately was that my cable modem speed more than doubled (from about 75 kbps to 175 kbps). Since I share the connection with 2-4 other machines this made a real difference. The clients also realized a speed increase. And no, the WIN98SE setup was not hampered by unoptimized RWIN etc. settings ... the WIN2k Pro TCP/IP stack just seems to be faster and more stable.

Win2k Pro also seems to use large amounts of ram more efficiently than WIN98SE ... I have 256Mb on an Abit BX6R2 MB, PIII-500, twin WD 20GB/7200rpm drives: it flies. Even though I use a PIII-850 with WIN98SE at work, my home machine seems just as fast, or faster. - But my kids say that their game play MAY be a little slower, although adequate and smooth.

With WIN2k Pro I really like being the ADMINISTRATOR and being able to make seperate accounts for my teenagers that severely restrict their ability to hose up my system!

Good luck.

My question would be: Is keeping Win98 worthed?

The answer is absolute: You have to use Windows 2000!

Ditto what Dave said, cable downloads are much faster on W2K. Biggest drawbacks are hardware incompatibilities (fu*&$%& HP scanner) and lack of ASPI layer, may cause you CD-RW problems.

I've been dual booting since early this year. Only boot into win98 for games, win2k for everything else.

I am similar to Linh. I got a dual boot with winme and win2k. Only boot into WinME because of driver issue for my Radeon on Games. I am in Win2k 80% of the time. Only if ATI fix the drivers for Win2k, I will format and only run Win2K. Hardly ever crash in Win2k, do not recall one actually.

For max Win2K performance and easier setup I would recommend a clean installation. I.e., don't get the upgrade for Win98, but get the full version of Win2K, even though it is more expensive.

The forums sure are acting up tonight. :p

I highly recommend a dual boot of Win 2000 and Win98SE. If you do this, I'd recommend using FAT32 on both so when you're on 98SE you can see your Win2000 partition. If you decide to go with just Win2000 I'd recommend going with NTFS. The security options are great, the GUI seems snappier (especially with more RAM), and it is much more stable.

To answer your question, yes Office 97 works in Win2k. :)

Made the switch to Win2k this summer and have not looked back. It's really nice to be able to have my system up for weeks at a time AND not have it go bonkers.

You can buy an upgrade version of Win2k which let's users of Win98 upgrade to Win2k. Same thing like the upgrade version of WinMil for current users of Win98. I have no experience with it, but something tells me the standalone would be better since NT is entirely different from Win9x.

can you not format and install the win2K upgrade? I have the win98 upgrade and when I reformatted lately and reinstalled 98 it didn't ask me from previous version of anything, is win2k upgrade the same.

Hope you dont like to play counter-strike. My fps got chopped in half going from win98 to win2k. Keep the dual boot for a while. I am wondering whether logging on as a power user instead of admin would affect cs like it does soldier of fortune.
