Is Winamp better than MS Media Player?

I just did a Windows Update for my Win2k and found that the Media Player 7.1 has a better CD Player than the original CD Player that came with Win2k. This thing supports CD Text nicely (seems to me) and has a graphic equalizer. Doesn't have the advertising that Winamp had, IIRC. Are there reasons to prefer Winamp?

Winamp advertising?
Never seen that.

Anyways, I allways use Winamp, doesnt look as fancy as WMP, but its much more functional IMO.

I prefer Winamp still. Media Player 7/8 is nice but is a little too pretty for me. I like to keep the simplicity, but I'm pretty sure if I spent more time with it, I'd grow to like it for non-music stuff.

How so? I used to use Winamp some when I was still on my Win95 system. I had trouble figuring out how things worked. Does it support CD Text? What features does it have that WMP does not? My impression was that it was different than the typical Windows program - that it didn't buy into the Windows API.

The CD player matches your CD's against CDDB, dont know about cd text.
I dont use it for playing CD's anyway, I copy my CD's to MP3's for conviniance anyway :)

I'll tell you, it's one beautiful program if your CDs have CD Text (Media Player 7.01, that is). All your tracks are listed right in front of you. All you have to do is double click any of them and it starts playing. Graphic equalizer - 8 different ranges, and it works. I was never able to figure out how to get the Winamp GE to work on my Win95 system. Plus there's a lot of configurability via a tabbed configuration form - haven't played with it much yet, but it looks impressive at first glance. Unless Winamp supports CD Text, I'm sticking with MP.

Well with CDDB you dont even need CD Text to see the songs in front of you ;)

How do you mean? It's downloaded, right? The song titles, I mean. If the database doesn't have your CD, you see nothing. I'm taking all my CDs and making copies with CD Text. When I can, I download the info. When I can't find that stuff on the Web, I enter the info myself from the sleeves.

I havent had a CD that hasnt been identified yet, and I listen to some rather odd music.

That is of course, as long as they are "real" cd's, but if they're not, you should have them in MP3 format anyways.

Jeez, I don't know. I was using Win2k's CD Player, which is Microsoft, and it tried to get CDDB info for all kinds of CDs I have, very common and obscure and it didn't find a single onw. Dunno what's up with that.

Since I upgraded to Windows XP I've ditched WinAMP and I use Windows Media Player for everything. WMP supports more formats, it's integrated and it has better skinning technology.

And yes, WMP finds the track lists of your CDs if you're connected to the internet when you insert the CD.

I like Winamp more than MP. IMO mp is taking more computer resources than winamp. The other advantage of Winamp is its' simplicity.

Why in the world would you be listening to music off cds if you have the mp3s? CDs have to seek and the quality isnt as good. I much prefer MP3s unless Im in a car or something in which i use CDs. I love winamp. Its great and the CDDB will get any Real CD. Besides, Microsoft stuff is gay and dumb looking. If everything wasnt made for windows there is no way id be using winblows anymore. Microsoft sucks.

I prefer Winamp for Mp3's and CDs. If you are buying legit cds, then winamp just gets the titles from cddb online and voila. Winamp uses less resources and the interface is pretty much straight forward. While the skins may not be as pretty as MS Media Player, just wait till Winamp 3.0 comes out (the beta is already looking good). Winamp also has a graphic equalizer as well. Hmmm... Winamp's advertising? Where'd you see that one?

Kronos, what are you talking about? Do you even know what mp3s are? Mp3 is a "lossy" compression format. Meaning that it is a less that the original (the cd) in quality (depending on what bitrate you are encoding in).

I've always preferred WinAMP over anything else since the beta days. I never listen to CDs in my computer, so I don't have the CD support installed for WinAMP, and consequently, I don't have any comment on it. Aside from that fact, WinAMP does everything I need, the plug-in selection is sweet; I can play all my MPC, Vorbis, and VBR MP3s without a hitch, and it's very resource-friendly. I only use WMP for video (aside from QuickTime movies.. damn Apple) :)

Hmm. For video, I use WMP 6.4 with DivX codec installed, and it works great. I have yet to feel the need to download any version of WMP 7 (and I hope I never have to, since the extra bloat is quite noticeable). For audio, I use Winamp for almost everything, but if I need to record streamed audio, I'll use Freeamp www.freeamp.org.

On Linux, XMMS has always worked great..

So you think MP3's sound BETTER than CD's??

I prefer Winamp for listening to music. MP is a bloated garagantua of a program (in terms of screen real estate), and it always crashed my computer when trying to access CDDB.

Huh? I play MP3s almost everyday with no problems whatsoever.

Probably having the CDROM drive send an analog signal through that dinky
little cable instead of across the IDE bus.

Ummmm, MP3 DISCARDS around 90% of the original sound data - in comparison I don't think a dinky cable has any effect whatsoever over a 15 inch run! Maybe you misread the statement or are confused?
