Is Winamp better than MS Media Player?

<< WMP starts up cause it's associated with CD-Audio tracks, hence when you just start one without specifying what program to use, it will default to WMP.

What's the best thing to get? Full, Standard or Lite? Or the special "Strokes" package, whatever that is?

Can someone suggest the best means to get into this? The "skins", etc.? The Winamp site itself? Some other site? Something else?

I uninstalled Winamp3 beta, rebooted, downloaded and installed Winamp 2.78, full version, picking all the options except AOL something or other (the last option). I did the online intro and then started Winamp. It's the default player for Windows audio files, and it starts playing but I can hear nothing. Also, it consistently says it cannot find the CDs I put in the drive - the same drive and same CDs that WMP had no trouble finding at CDDB (Gracenote CDDB is what Winamp calls it). Anybody got a clue what's up with this? I did not uninstall WMP, but an entry in this thread said I didn't have to.

The last disk I put in was found at CDDB, but I still can't hear a thing.
I can hear my track with headphones on the drive. If I right click a track in Explorer and go Open With, if I pick WMP, it plays fine and line out from my sound card (Hercules GTXP) is fine. If I pick Winamp, there is no line output, just headphones. Do I have to uninstall WMP?

Probably having the CDROM drive send an analog signal through that dinky little cable instead of across the IDE bus.

Err, no.

(1) The cable makes no difference whatsoever.
(2) MPEG layer 3 is a lossy compression technique which means you lose some of the original data. However small and unnoticeable it is, the original CD will always sound better.
(3) Most CD-ROMs support digital media anyway.

As opposed to what, analog media? Aren't all cds digital?

I actually find that the Windows player on XP is really crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why you ask? Well because it keeps uping and lowering the volume! Remember when Microsoft said that Mp3s would be downgraded with their new wiindows media player? Well they did!
I've just installed that Quintessential Player when I found on a PC magazine disc and it works great!
If it didn't I would have gone looking for winamp.

I've found that I can get line-out audio from my GTXP using my Pioneer 106S DVD-CDROM drive, but still silence from my Liteon 24x CDRW drive. Both have cables from drive to soundcard. As I say, WMP puts out the line-out, Winamp nada.

Another point. I complained above that I never was able to get Winamp's graphic equalizer to work and people go "Heh, stupid, press the On button." Well I'm trying that, but the sound is not affected. Why in the world did I start messing with Winamp? I really do have better things to do than wrestle with this. I have no current complaints with WMP. I'm on Win2k SP2, no problems with WMP. I'm just curious, ya know? I want to know what the excitement's about. If I can find no way to get Winamp to work with my Liteon and get the graphic equalizer to actually do something I'm going to Add/Remove Programs and back to the WMP download site.
