I have heard people claim outright that western culture is better than anything else. Do we do things the better way? We are the most educated, most sophisticated, most resourceful, most powerful, richest, most technologically advanced civilization ever, right? So is western culture the best?

For one reason: we are shameless in stealing other people's ideas and incorporating them into our culture when we see that they work better than what we had.

We had the sandwich. We saw the burrito. The burrito is better than the sandwich so we adopted the burrito.

Nothing is better. There are things that are great here but the world is too big for absolutes.
 
We're a bunch of idiots who think cell phones are the height of civilization, so it's hard to believe we're better than anything. But at least we don't shit in the streets.
 
We respect the rights of women and minorities. We have a secular governance and a tolerance for extremist opinions. We doing pretty good on the progress scale.

The main issues we are backsliding hard on are government corruption and wealth disparity.

Eh, I would disagree on these 3.

Most educated? Nope. Most westerners feel "logic" is all they need to make a decision or become an expert on whatever is being discussed. Rarely do people admit they don't know or have little to no experience on a matter, yet, they ramrod their opinion as a fact.

Most sophisticated? Hell no. We are a nation of wannabee stars. Even before the internet, everyone wanted to be someone. And, we resort to crass buffoonery and blowhard tactics to get to it.

Most resourceful? Certainly no. We waste, not only ecological resources, but we also waste our own personal resources; emotionally, mentally, spiritually, time, effort, etc. We also have confused ripping people off and fooling others are resourcefulness. Robbing someone is not being resourceful, it's being a thief.
 
Westerners today embrace a culture of mediocrity. Everything from education, jobs, how we behave in society, how we treat our bodies, to the way we allow our government to operate.
 
Culture is too subjective an idea to be quantified and compared. Every culture has its good and bad points. What I would say unequivocally, though, is that western liberal ideas of the role of government, the rights of individuals, the rights of those accused of crimes, and the separation between government and theology are better than any other alternative ideas I am aware of.

Also, Mark is right. I'm sure I could live in any western-style country and be reasonably content, though some definitely have some advantages over others. One of these days I'll have the means to live where I want to, and I'll decide where to live based on who is best living up to the ideals of western government.

I wouldn't say awesome. We're just one tiny step above monkeys and some of the rest of the world isn't. We should aspire to something better before we start patting ourselves on the back. Besides, it's all a matter of degrees. We have a lot of reasons to look down on countries that let their kids drink water from rivers with dead bodies in them, but most western societies have good reasons to look down on us. We're the worst of the best, America, Fuck Yeah!

Neither does the one on the left if you think about it. She dresses like that because her culture praises it, her culture demands it of her. She feels accepted by dressing that way. The pressures are different, but they are both pressures.

Wow. No, no, a thousand times no.

The one on the right gets tortured and perhaps killed if she refuses to dress that way. The one on the left would have a slightly harder time finding a boyfriend if she showed a little less skin. There are a whole shitload of women in western society who can achieve great things and find incredible success without bowing to the gods of body image. Women can and do say screw the system and get ahead on their talents, find men thanks to their brains and the personalities, make billions without displaying a hint of cleavage. Show me a woman in Iran or Iraq or Syria who says screw the system, ditches Islam and tries to make her way with sex appeal. If you find even one her funeral will be tomorrow.
