Not actually it looked like a discussion about Troy State that turned into people bashing the undergrad system in alabama. A bit of a difference considering I'm in the undergrad system, but don't go to Troy State.

But that's a real discussion. Until you get there people were talking about a school system. You are the first person in the thread to attack a person directly. You don't disagree, you don't make a counter argument, you start your post by calling someone an asshole. Your next post attacks his sexual orientation. In between those two posts very little was said about you, just a discussion of the school system. It certainly looks like the blame falls squarely on you.

I wouldn't say that the blame falls squarely on him even though he was the first to take it to a personal level, but he does need to learn how to calm down and act more civilized when faced with a different opinion.

This is where we will always differ. Just because you don't intend something to not be personal doesn't mean it isn't. When you tell me that my schools sucks because it is in Alabama that is personal to me. Whether you meant it or not or rescinded it doesn't matter. Explicit personal attacks are not different than implicit ones, although people like Moonbeam tend to get away with implicit ones.

You'll notice that much of the fervor in any thread comes off of implied insults. I like implied insults, but it's really hard to make your victim get them most of the time. Perspective differs from intent in a major way. Why do you think some people get upset over something that you think is crap, but I'll bet you'd the same about something that bothers you. Everyone has thinks that aggravate them incessantly. Cracking on Alabama is one of those things to me; especially when it says ANY school in Alabama sucks. Yeah, that's personal to me because I attend undergrad in Alabama. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. I'm saying that's my perspective.

Yes, and what we're all saying is that your perspective on this is illogical and not common. You don't severely insult someone if they don't like your favorite baseball team or what school you went to.

I don't believe that my previously rescinded comment warranted such an abrasive and personal attack. Saying 'AL sucks' doesn't mean that you should reply back with 'fvck u ahole, u prick'...Is it wrong to say AL sucks? Sure. But it doesn't warrant such an offensive reply.

Is that not your opinion that it doesn't warrant such a reply? If you said NY sucks don't you think New Yorkers would cuss you out? What if you went to South Boston and said Irish people and Southies suck. Would they take it as an accident and not verbally acost you? I doubt it. That's your opinion, and I doubt any civilized(which is an open ended idea anyway) person would say that intention 100% absolves someone of their comments. If I called someone a dirty jew, does that mean it wasn't offensive if I meant that they physically had dirt on them, and that they were in fact jewish?

Well if I say 'Hi there' - which would seem to have no PERSONAL insult in it, but you somehow become personally insulted by it and attack another, then that is strange. Again it takes common sense. I didn't call you an ahole, redneck, whatever. I just said at that time that the AL school system sucks, which was my opinion. To 99.999% of the population, that would not be very inflammatory, if at all...especially to someone who was NOT in the thread at all. It obviously could not have been mean tto be personal to you. For the OP, Cliff Notes: Troy State isn't a highly regarded school in the world of Academia, however, it is a good value as far as the education you recieve for your money, and your boss laughing about someone having a Master's from there is mostly unmerited.

The member Mill does tend to talk about himself quite a bit, as I just learned a great deal about him from a quick scan of this thread gone awry.

Mill's father was a VP for a large grocery chain and was tragically killed in a plane crash *I'm very sorry for your loss* This has left him financially secure at a decidedly young age. He owns a nice home in Alabama, has 2 very nice automobiles. He was a very good HS student who recieved a scholarship and is studying for a degree in criminal justice, and will either attend law school or become a law enforcement officer *both very worthy goals* He has an anger management problem, at least in so far as it pertains to intarweb message board discussions, and is a real bulldog of a debater, with the one negative being his reliance on the Ad Hom tactic.

One caveat, I had a scholarship to Mississippi State that but I lost it when I left there. I wasn't a great student because I was sick for about two years and almost had to drop out, but I went to a very good HS, and was able to get a scholarship based on my ACT and GPA. I'd have not posted "my life's story" but I don't think it's fair to say I live in a trailer.
