I went there 9 years ago and it was a shit hole. I won't ever go back. You're better off visiting a slum somewhere else. Cheap alcohol isn't worth it.

Given the responses from this thread, I'd have to say it's probably not a good idea to go there.

Mexico isn't Disneyland. Shit happens enough with six guys in their 20's let alone putting them in a different country with crooked police and dangerous drug cartels. You guys are probably planning on drinking and partying down there, which is probably the worst thing you could do down there right now (young people whose parents probably have money, drinking, late at night, sketchy areas of the city, drinking, etc).

Just have fun in the San Diego Gaslamp district instead.

This. It is much safer and there is a ton of night life to enjoy in downtown San Diego.

Bah...what a bunch of nancy boys. TJ is a great place for young men to go have fun.

OP, Go...get drunk, get stoned, (plan to bring some back) go see the donkey show.

If Enrique or Octavio offer to take you to that "special" party...go. You'll have the time of your life.

I haven't been to TJ in nearly 40 years. It was a shithole then, I can't imagine that it's gotten any better over the years...in fact, it's most likely only gotten MUCH worse. (but if you go...see the donkey show.) :p

Stay out of the border towns. Even my Mexican friend who still has family there doesn't want to go back because of how much worse it's gotten in the last couple years.

Yes, it's fine, enjoy yourself. Make sure you wear your nice clothes, nice watch, etc... Be really flashy about it too, they won't fuck with you if it looks like you have money. Bring a laptop and report back to us while you're there.

You'll be fine, just go to Rosarito instead. TJ is a shithole. I wouldn't worry too much about any danger there unless you're a tool who goes into the bad peripheral areas and/or you don't have your wits about you. Rosarito at least has fun bars to go to, TJ is just foul.

Go.

Stick to Revolucion street. As soon as the sun starts to set - about 7pm. Get out.

Stay with your friends, do not get hammered. Drink beer or soda only. If a vendor offers to pour you a beer in a cup decline, no alcohol in public or immediate fine/bribe will occur by the police.

Hit a strip club or 3. Go to a brothel, look around and enjoy your time in the shithole it is. Everything the stores sell is overpriced, all the goods they sell are crap.

Great food can be had & the strip clubs allow you to touch, just make sure you tip and do not act a fool.

You need a passport to corss the border now!

I was there when I was 16. One of the strippers tried to steal my wallet.

And don't take them up for offers to go in the back room.

Dave: I heard about this guy who got some spanish flies for his girlfriend, because she wasn't putting out. He gave her one and stopped at a liquor store or something, and when he came out guess what he found?
Woody: She was dead on top of the gearshift.
Dave: You know the same guy!
Woody: No, the same story.

I was in Rocky Point, Mexico 3 years ago. I wonder what that's like now. It wasn't much back then...

I've visited Rocky Point every summer with a group of friends for the last four years. It hasn't changed too much in that time. A couple more condo buildings on the beach, a few more strip clubs, and now they've got a Burger King.

Being a small town in the middle of nowhere it doesn't get much attention from organized crime. I've never felt unsafe there, though we did see a truck full of Federales at one point.

Except for cheaper booze and the prospect of extra "services" at the strip clubs...what would be the appeal of TJ over somewhere like, say, Vegas (I'd guess drive times even out when considering the border)?

It's pretty dead there now, kind of a shame. Went down there for lunch a few months back. Stay on Revolucion if you go. BTW, if cigar is wrapped in plastic, it's not Cuban.

Some of you need to pull your panties from your crack. Sure Tijuana is dangerous, it always has been. Don't get too drunk and don't wander into unknown areas and you will be fine. Last time I was there, a few years ago, the US Border agent gave me a bunch of crap because I came back across the border alone, telling me what a bad idea that was. I asked the border agent "have you ever been to Oakland?". There are areas in the US more dangerous than Tijuana (our capital Washington, D.C. being one).
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-02-05-border-crime_x.htm
Tijuana, population 1.2 million, saw one slaying a day in 2006 and roughly two kidnappings a week. The murder rate for a city of Tijuana's size is not huge. Some U.S. cities have a larger murder rate, including Washington, D.C.

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jan/11/world/la-fg-tijuana-violence11-2010jan11/2
Oscar Escobedo Carignan announced a public relations initiative to improve the city's image.
The negative portrayals are unfair, he said, blaming the media and citing per-capita crime figures that he said supported his case:
"We [Tijuana] finish with 20 homicides per 100,000 people. Brazil gets 150 homicides, and they get the Olympics"
