I'm not going to make fun of it. I am just curious to know if it's justified in washing to that extent.

My car is probably nicer, but I don't consider mine worthy of being nearly spotless.

Sometimes I'll go nearly two months without washing it. It's a piece of machinery that's used outdoors, it's supposed to be dirty.

Unless you have a "show car" of some sort, you don't need it that clean.

A typical 5 dollar wash will protect it from rust and dirty and will maintain the value. Going extra and washing it by hand will not improve any further than that.

Smoke crack much? TAKE CARE OF YOUR PAINT!!!!

If I take my car to the automatic "touchless" car wash, the car may "look" somewhat clean when it comes out, but it is never full clean. If I take my finger and rub across the paint, it still has black grime on it. Those water jets can't get that stuff off.

I use a microfiber cloth to wash my car and I get all of that dirt/grime off. I use that Armor-All Powerwash Gel that you just squirt on when the car is wet, then wipe then and wash off. Then while the car is still wet, I use Eagle-One Spray-on wax, then wax it dry with one of those synthetic drying cloths.

Takes me maybe 25-30 to wash the car/wheels and another 10 if I use the wax. Add another 10 if I do the windows/windshield inside and out.

Then what warrents looking clean all the time. like MIKEMIKE said it's about being proud and inspecting your car and being able to do other regularly scheduled maintenence on your car. Who cares if you drive a 10 year old car it'll last longer if you keep it clean, especially up here in the northern states, the salt grime is incredibly corrosive to your car and you'll see the first time it's sunny and clear winter day in Michigan there are 50 cars waiting in the drive through car wash because people know what that salt is doing to their paint, shocks/struts/undercarriage etc.

i dont go THAT far... but i do wax my car. i need to wax it this coming week while cool, and wash it EXTREMELY well. i use the local car wash, but not the drive through part, the handheld sprayer thing as thats all i have and can do, its better than nothing, so ill go home clean my car from inside to outside completely. and wax the outside fully.

Just spend the 5 bucks.

Washing by hand may get a "bit" cleaner, but a car is a piece of machinery, it doesn't need to be sterile.

5 hours..goddamn how big is that car?

5 hours to wash your car........ what do you have ......... an 18 wheeler. I can wash my car in 30 minutes. Great exercise also :)

Washing a car by hand is a lot cleaner since most car washes here are the no touch jet spray types.

Cheers,
Aquaman

No kidding. Spending 5 hours to wash (not wax) a car is idiotic. That's about as dumb as attempting to scan 700 maga......ah, nevermind. ;) :D

Well, whatever floats your boat, but I'd rather be doing other things than washing a car that is going to get dirty again in a few days.

I don't think cars were meant to be that clean.

Less than an hour on a Friday afternoon or during the weekend ain't gonna hurt anyone. For me at least, 25 mins just to wash and be done with it.

Even if you don't wash it all the time, wouldn't you rather do it right yourself, vs getting some half-ass wash at a car wash? Just think, if you keep going to the car wash, you're leaving behind dirt each and every single time that isn't being removed by the water jets.

It's especially bad with brake dust on your wheels. After a while, that sh!t will just bake onto your wheels.

i may not be NEARLY as old as you, nor do i want to say im as "successful" as you like you want us to believe... but.

if you want ANYONE to have a good impression of you... KEEP YOUR STUFF CLEAN. the first impression anyone gets of you in person is the car you drive up in.

if i was a professional and hiring someone... i would make sure they keep their stuff clean, and that means they will care about their work and everything else. its about PRIDE again.

you would have NEVER lasted where i worked over the summer. if it was dirty, it got cleaned. i cleaned EXCAVATORS off, yes the things that dig dirt. i cleaned shovels, i cleaned DUMP TRUCKS, wheel loaders, bull dozers... etc. it was clean, every day they washed all the vehicles before leaving for the day. showed up clean and came back dirty, but it was the presentation of CLEAN that people saw, and immediately it means "they care"

I really am serious when I say it takes me 5 hours. Maybe I'm just slow. Even really an hour is too much. I mean, scrubbing down a car really takes the energy out of you.

I get your point, but I still contend that vehicles in general, unless they are for "show" purposes, were not meant to be so clean.

This is also comparable to people who shovel their driveway or rake their leaves. I'm not a slob, but I don't shovel the snow or rake the leaves. It's the outdoors, I believe it's supposed to look like that. Same with cars. I keep it reasonably clean, but I'm not trying to impress anyone.

Not really. I'm 5'11, 120lbs, and it takes me 20 minutes just to prepare and clean up (combined), let alone wash the thing.

Yeah, I think you're just slow :D

Here's what I did this evening:

1) Spray down the car (took about a minute)
2) Squeeze gel on passenger side of car and wash (one squirt each for rear flanks, rear door, front foor, front 1/4 panel). Wash. Rinse. 4 mins tops
3) Squeeze gel on hood, front bumper. Wash. Rinse. 2 mins.
4) Squeeze gel on rear hatch, rear bumper and roof. Wash. Rinse. 4 mins.
5) Repeat #2 for drivers side. 4 mins
6) Clean wheels. 6 mins.
7) Rinse car off with Mr. Clean Auto Dry spot-free rinse cycle.

DONE in less than 30 mins.

Haha I'd laugh if you were in my town, you'll get a ticket for not raking your leaves or shoveling your driveway in the winter.

And 5 hours....yeesh my car takes 30 minutes. I mean do you have COPD that you get that tired from washing your car?

No no no, I think lawns should be taken well care of, and the inside of my house is absolutely spotless, but my point is, that is the "indoors," as opposed to something that is "outdoors."

Outdoors is supposed to be dirty, and a car is something that is operated outdoors.
