Is this modem...gasp...DEAD?

Built a new system recently and installed a Lucent winmodem (please, let's not rehash the winmodem vs. hardware modem issue. I've never had a problem with a Lucent modem until this one). When I run diagnostics, the system detects it fine. When I try to fax or connect to my ISP, I get a "No Dial Tone" error. I've checked the connections and made sure it's plugged into the right jack on the back of the modem. I've replaced the phone line. I've unchecked the box that says "Wait for dial tone to begin dialing" in Properties. I've plugged in a phone to the modem and the phone has worked fine. This is a new modem. The last modem I had was identical and worked flawlessly. Is there any thing else I can try before stomping this modem into pieces?

The darn thing sounds broken to me, but you may want to search for some new drivers online before throwing out the window.

Yea, it does sound dead. I have the same modem and have never had a problem. Go here to download the latest driver, 5.97. If you have 2 lines, plug your phone into the 2nd line and see if there's a dial tone. You've probably already done that, but just a suggestion. Also, re-check that "Wait for dial tone before dialing" box again. Sometimes I have the No Dial Tone problem with my modem, and its because of my phone lines that actually don't have a dial tone, not my modem. One more suggestion: If you have an LT modem that has 2 spaces to plug in the phone line in the back, one marked Phone and the other Line, plug a phone into the one that says Phone and see if there's a dial tone. If not, the thing's dead.

There's a fusible link between the jack to plug in the line and the modem itself, which is to protect the computer in case of a surge over the phone line. After lightning storms I see a lot of dead modems due to the fusible link being blown. It's built into the PCB of the board, so it's not repairable. The modem diagnostics show it's fine, but you can't get a dialtone, and the pass-thru to a phone will work. Return it or buy a new one is my best guess.

Thanks everyone. And Thanks Chemwiz...I think you nailed it. The pass through works fine. Modem diagnostics work fine. Tried new drivers. No dial tone. Well, it was only thirteen bucks. I'll have to get another one.
