which is not to say an led version wouldn't be worth it. many d cells +led = massive run time.
but mags led design is poorly cooled and their led is old tech and of course they still over charge. so its a lost opportunity.

I meant the LED version costs that much. I have a 3W LED Maglite that I think was $20. It may have been $30

Yup.

Like everything made by Mag Lite, the "upgrade" is overpriced crap.

A surefire 6p will be about the same size as a mini-mag light, but will put out more light than a 4 D-Cell maglight.

surefire is overpriced

it is depending upon what you need.

i read a zillion reviews on candlepowerforums and the specs for a ton of lights before i finally got a surefire e2L. i really wanted to go with something cheaper, but i ended up getting it for xmas.

the e2L cree just had the best balance of throw, spill, runtime and battery life that i was looking for. and i wanted a forward clickie with momentary on, as i use momentary on a ton. too many chinese lights had reverse clickies. others did have a tactical forward clickie but they were geared more towards throw, i needed more spill as well.

the e2L cree gives me exactly the amount of light i need to either walk a trail, with good throw but also not so bright that it overpowers close quarters work. on top of that it has finely tuned regulation for 9 hours of full light, with 5 hours of declining usable light. i wanted looong battery life with the type of beam i could use for mostly everything.

i couldnt find anything else that did this at the time. the knurling is great, the clip is solid and this thing just feels good in hand. but it is pricey and id hate to lose it :)

also, i made sure my gf knew about batterystation, cause they offset the price of the surefires by giving a bunch of cr123's with a purchase.
