1. Because hippos are notoriously and violently territorial.
2. Because hippos are omnivores, and would be more likely inclined to steal that calf as food.
3. Because most animals don't typically care about the survival of other animals of different species...much less Genus, Order, Family, etc...
4. Because most animals aren't altruistic, to where they would place themselves in danger for the well being of another, even of their own species..or even pack/pride/whatever
5. Because most animals don't understand the basics of CPR and First Aid. *credit to Alienwho*
