That's pretty wierd...

why? whats weird about a hippo seeing a young animal in danger and attempting to help it?

1. Because hippos are notoriously and violently territorial.
2. Because hippos are omnivores, and would be more likely inclined to steal that calf as food.
3. Because most animals don't typically care about the survival of other animals of different species...much less Genus, Order, Family, etc...
4. Because most animals aren't altruistic, to where they would place themselves in danger for the well being of another, even of their own species..or even pack/pride/whatever
5. Because most animals don't understand the basics of CPR and First Aid. *credit to Alienwho*

'cept the hippo was never in any danger. A hippo can bite a croc in half, and the croc's teeth couldn't penetrate the hippo's skin.

'cept the factors of tough hide and mass don't always equate in to " no danger". Danger is anything that could potentially put you in harm's way. Hippos, though massive and powerful, can still be vulnerable. Also, during the migrations there's usually many crocs in the water, not just one. If that were a full grown mail croc at potentially 20 feet and 2500lbs, with others its size around...it could be in danger. One on one, yeah, a hippo would win....but they don't tend to rush towards an animal killing another animal for really any reason outside of territoriality. But this didn't seem to be a territorial act.
