The median HOUSEHOLD income in CA is between 50-60K for the most part. 80K is more than enough to live on, crazybitch.

1080 / month rent
300 / month food
300 / month utilities
40 / month car insurance
no car payment
had furniture
drove about 200 miles a month so gas wasnt an issue. paid more in rent to live closer to work so I could walk

this left about 600 / month for my credit card and fun.

This is an exceedingly low financial expectation for the average person. Many of those figures are not realistic.

Thank you for sharing though, it's interesting.

Oh, you're going to be a fun one.

Do you think the AVERAGE person drives 200 miles a month? Not having a car payment is quite rare as well.

Stop being snide.

80K is a exceeding low standard on ATOT, please reply back when you get your 100% raise.

Driving is a choice. I drive zero "miles" a month.

What kind of person doesn't drive? That's just weird.

My expenses per month:

$800 rent
$140 student loans
$70 auto insurance
$100 utilities
$200 food + petro
$45 cell phone

$1355 x 12 = $16,260

Anything I make beyond the above figure goes to fun, stocks, savings.

If you can't figure it out then you're far too stupid to deserve to make that much, since 85% of the entire population makes less than that.

That's unfortunate for them.

80k is great for your age. You would have to save a couple of years if you want to buy a home, but if you are good with your money (savings etc.) then 80K is quite a good sum. I've lived on 22K$ salary for the past few years now in Boston paying Boston rent ($1000 per month), and have scraped by fine.

Perhaps you should rethink in your life what is necessary and what is luxury. The figures I posted are 100% real and what I lived off of for 2 years. I'm not sure I can break this down any further for you. Thanks for playing.

I never doubted the validity of them, I was merely pointing out that the numbers were exceptionally conservative compared to the average person.

The average person has a higher insurance rate, drives many more miles, and has a car payment.

I think you are over estimating what the average person makes................. Average person in California (arguably the most expensive state in the US makes just over 30k. (figure taken by the 60k 2 person family income divided by 2)

US Census average family income

But it sounds like you made much much more than $30k a year, and your allocations were exceedingly conservative. Therefore it's clear that it takes a lot of money to do well in life... :(

it depends on what you think well is.

941/house
149/insurance (4 cars, motorhome, atv)
50/power (we rarely use more, and they charge us minimum.)
85/phone and dsl
55/dish

we don't budget gas, food or other entertainment since we don't know if we will travel or not. if we stay at home, we usually only go out about once a week so a tank of gas could last 1 day - 1 month depending on what we do or where we go.

if you can't make it on 50k and you are single, and not saving a pretty good amount, i have to wonder about your mindset and lifestyle.

What is your definition of enough?

In Seattle, with 80k, you can afford to go out, buy toys, fancy clothes, drive a decent car, but you cannot afford a house.

In the Bay Area, with 80k, not only you cannot afford a house, you probably won't be able to afford a condo either. But you should still live very well compared to the average American.

Housing cost is the biggest contributer to cost-of-living, you figure out how much you can spend on housing, the rest is easy.

Who the fuck cares if it's good or not. All that should matter is if YOU are living comfortably enough for you. You don't need somebody else to tell you if you're doing well or not.

The line of work is irrelevant. Is $80k a year good enough these days compared to the populous?

I'm living in the Bay area making just over 1/3 of that. wtf.

That's an expensive house.

very expensive house.... about 1k more than most people would even think about paying. I just threw some numbers down real quick to actually quantify how much 50k after taxes can buy you.

yeah, but it's legit for some places out out here. Of course, you can ALWAYS find something for much less than the average.

Stockton is supposedly the best place place to buy in the country right now. Of course, you have to be OK with living amongst squaters and hobos.

yea. dont you know you aren't successful by ATOT standards unless it's over 200k.

If you can't live off of 80k a year then you are terrible with money. I honestly don't care where you live in the US. In some areas this may not be a ton of money but no matter where you are it's plenty to live off of and have enough left over.

80k is 50k after taxes.

3k / month for housing = 36000
500 / month for utilities = 6000
200 / month for food = 2400

Total of listed: 44,400

This isnt totaling everything obviously but then again if you are paying 3k / month for your house I hope you're making more than 80k per year.

Unfortunately a gym membership, gas, clothes, computers, and furniture aren't included. I fear that I will have no money to use outside of basic shelter, food, and transportation needs.

Holy crap. You suck at living.

Have you ever lived in civilization? You're clearly not from a major city.

I lived in Chicago for 5 years. Spent exactly $75 per MONTH on all the travel I needed. Work and otherwise.

These "cities" are quite populated, you know...
