Is this an example of texture shimmering?

I'm using catalst 6.3 (same thing happens with 6.4) and tried playing the game with CAT AI off, standard, and advanced. I have mipmaps set to max. AF set to HQ App controlled.

16xAF in game

I wouldn't have thought I'd see this with my pricey card:

I can only see shimmering when in game and I'm moving. For example, when I ahd my 7800GT SLI, the floor seemed to "crawl".

its only worse when there's movement.

I dont' want to start a flame war...but my 7800 GT CO showed far less of this effect (HQ in the drivers)

Frame rates are something altogether differenct, though :)

lol not those. They ARE bullet holes.

Look @ the 2nd vertical half of the pic. The wall looks extremely grainy. Moves around a lot when I move...

What texture filtering? Trilinear? Are you using compressed textures? FEAR's textures to tend to look odd. It does not look like a mipmap transition to me, just the peculiarity of FEAR. Why not start up 3D Analyze and color the mip levels to see what's happening?

You mean this:

mip map coloring?

Never used the program before... guess this is what you mean

BTW xtknight, I put in an order for a 20WMGX2 so I'll update your thread when it comes in!
Thanks for your great LCD guide :)

Yeah, that's it. Very odd that the nearest wall is green. You'd think it would be the sharpest of the transitions (red) [judging from the picture at the bottom of this page: http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/06/03/ati/page5.html]. It looks like it is a mipmap transition issue (that's why FEAR looks odd to me).

Glad you found it of help. I look forward to the review.

Thanks, man.

funny you could make something of that pic cos I sure couldn't

XD

what's a likely solution?

BTW, newegg has the 20wmgx2... kinda funny that I had such a hard time looking for one.
Ended up getting it from page computers 3 day shipping $665. Newegg has 2 day shipping for $663

doh!

Solutions:

1. Modify FEAR engine source code :Q
2. Introduce 'optimizations' into drivers

But there might be some way to change the FEAR config file to make the nearest texture the sharpest one. I don't know if this was by design, or if it is a bug. I've just never seen mipmaps like that before (though admittedly I don't look at them all day either). Perhaps they conluded that gave the best quality. Wow, I might even be able to afford the 20WMGX2 (by next year?). That thing used to be $800. The silver bezel one is still $760. They must be using some high quality silver paint...

Damn. I doubt Monolith will come up with anything sometime soon...

the silver NEC price is rediculous! It's $150 more than the black and silver one... maybe It was better I went with page computers ;-)
