Is there such a thing as the "gay" vote?

I only know a little concerning politics, but do politicians ever try to appeal to the gay community? You always hear about the Black and Mexican communities. Just curious.

For the record, I'm straight.

Yes there is a gay vote.
Politicians try not to discuss gay issues because Republicans know they aren't going to gain any votes even if they tried and democrats look like they are appealing to special interests and not the 'average' American.

The large majority of gay politics in America is the agenda of the anti-Gay bigot crowd, who much outnumber gays.

In many recent elections when the republicans want to get some terrible candidate elected, they put an anti-gay ballot on the measure to get republican turnout.

I'm aware of little direct pro-gay politics outside of San Francisco, where being anti-gay is about like being a member of the KKK in most of the nation.

Political interests who want to pander to the majority for their vote say that the poor majority is oh so abused by (fill in the blank demonized group).

You see it where crooks who want the Christian vote invent things like a "war on Christmas", as well as with gays ("they are trying to push a gay agenda!!!!!")

Are you replying to yourself? 😕

Yes there's a gay vote. There is a "vote" for every group you want to lump together. There are the obvious ones... Blacks, Soccer moms, Middle aged angry white guys... there's probably a demographic for "pro paste eating third grade teachers" in somebody's book.

It's called marketing... Isolate a group with specific characteristics and focus on what they want.

Gays vote for Democrats.

Except the Gay republicans

They were on either the Daily Show or the Colbert Report a few months back
Is that like a jewish nazi? 😕

No, it is a successful person who doesn't want all their stuff taken away and given to the less efficient, excuse me less fortunate. They have also spent their entire life dealing with being different in a society that doesn't always embrace them. Bottom line is they know how to cope but want to do it with money in the bank.

Well if that's the case, you fellas sure do a crummy job marketing that to gay folks. Because while the general population is pretty evenly split, gay voters go HUGELY towards Democrats. Whatever their economic views, clearly gay people don't want to side with a party that treats gay people the way Republicans do.

works both ways, like the crooks who want the gay vote claiming "they are trying to make your lifestyle illegal, they are homophobes, they are ignorant "insert predominanty white christian group here", or along the lines "they are trying to force the bible down our throats"

Sorry, both sides use the same theatrics to get the vote, it just doesn't look like it when you favor the issue

The average household income for gay people is $61,300 compared with
$56,900 for heterosexuals

Hmm, I suppose the vast majority would rather be treated like humans than have a few extra bucks in the bank...

I hope that was a joke, because it sounds really ignorant. Have you never heard of Log Cabin Republicans?

The theatrics might be the same, but the facts behind the arguments couldn't be more different. Last time I checked, gay people didn't want to make anyone else do anything except let the gay people live how they want. The "gay agenda" quite literally is an agenda that only applies to gay people, which is exactly who the anti-gay agenda targets. The only difference is that there is only one group trying to force the other to live by their beliefs.

No, the Republicans don't cater to the gay vote as it would alienate too many of their usual supporters. In the gay community it is almost treasonous to suggest voting for a non-Democratic candidate, I've gotten myself into a number of heated arguments on this front being that I lean Libertarian though will vote Republican if no Libertarian is on the ticket.

I guess it comes down to the fact that I consider my sexuality to be one small part of me amongst many and I can't in good faith support many Democratic candidates since my beliefs differ so greatly in a number of areas I consider important.

the only research I know of that actually sought to use representative sampling methods to examine how much gays and lesbians earn found that they earn less than heterosexuals, not more. asking the readers of some up-market glossy lifestyle magazine about their income (which is how many of these studies are done, i.e., they use convenience samples) is not going to provide an accurate picture of how much gays and lesbians earn.

"According to the CNN exit poll, 4 percent of all voters identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the same percentage as four years ago, at least as reported by ABC News that year. By comparison, 11 percent of voters were black, 9 percent were Latino, 2 percent were Asian, and 3 percent were Jewish. In 1996, 5 percent of the electorate self-identified as gay."
article

So in the US the gay vote (at around 4% to 5%) is larger than the Asian vote (2%) or the Jewish vote (3%).

Also in the 2004 federal election only 23% of people willing to say they are gay in an exit poll voted for Bush.

Interesting voter figures:

Fixed it for you. You want to equate the evil agenda of the right with the moral agenda for equal rights; it's like equating the two sides on slavery or civil rights.
