Is there something wrong with my life?

This morning I got up at 7:00a.m. At 8:00a.m. I started started perusing my regular web sites. At 3:00p.m. I jumped in my car, drove 55 miles, changed out a motherboard in 15 minutes and drove home. I will be paid for 8 hours work by my employer.

I have been doing this for almost 3 years. I rarely work more than 2 hours a day, although I do spend considerable time driving to and from service calls.

I am guaranteed 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week.

Did I fall through an opening in the space/time continuum? Did I wander through a crack into another dimension? Did I fall and hit my head?

Oh, and some days I never even leave my house because I have no calls. I still get paid for 8 hours work.

My bosses think I'm the greatest thing since the invention of KY jelly.

Should I feel guilty?

I don't, but if you think I should I will consider it.

As a matter of fact they are always hiring. Only problem being that the new hires actually have to work. How else could I get away with working so little if there weren't others out there picking up my slack.

Yes, I am bragging. Can you think of any reason I shouldn't?

I have no intention of quitting until my employer figures out that they are getting hosed by a pro.

I'd like nothing more than to help my fellow ATOTers by steering them to a great job, but if I put that information on the web my employer would surely realize who I am and how they have been scammed.

I will give you a hint, though. Back in the old days before many of you were even a thought, stores used to use ---- --------s rather than the POS (Point of Sale) terminals they now use. The company is also known nationally as well as world wide.

Today at Albertson's I was buying a bagel and saw on all of the unused monitors at the checkouts it said "WinPOS" and I thought to myself "Finally a version of windows that will perform as it is advertised".

I'm very jealous. Don't quit (as long as the pay is good.) But, the reason they pay you even when you don't do anything is cause they pay for your availiblity, i'm sure. So it's not like you can get a second job. (Unless you worked a VERY flexible second job.....hmmm....

How do you get a job like that anyhow!?!?

It's great that you have a job like that, HP. But please stay prepared for the possibility that you have to seek other employment. Use your available time to develop job skills that will make it possible for you to jump into something else if need be. I understood your hint.

I have three friends who did similar work for a large hardware/software outfit. One got cut in 1999, one in 2001, and the third is hanging on by a thread. He has his MCSE and is supposed to be working on his Cisco certification, but somehow never gets around to doing it even though he has about the same workload as you do. It won't be long before they abandon the HW field support totally and subcontract it out to the same people who do field service for Dell, HP/CPQ, etc. Even IBM is taking on subcontracted field support from other companies to keep their guys busy. The guy who still has his job will probably screw around until the axe falls, then kick himself for not having gotten his Cisco cert already. The companies who take on the subcontracted field support are much cheaper than having a bunch of separate companies each maintaining their own field service organization.

When I hear executives refer to their field support guys as "board jockeys", it's clear to me that they don't put much value on that position and I have no doubt they would subcontract that work out in a flash if it would save them even $100 a year.
