Is there really any outrage with the sydney sweeney genes commercial or is it manufactured outrage?

The Right is claiming this whole situation is anti-liberal and it’s causing librul tears, but as a liberal myself, I don’t see the issue here. Syndey isn’t even MAGA from what I understand.

It seems so astroturfed to me. As a liberal I feel the same way.

It just highlights how the Right’s entire existence and purpose in life is to try to disparage the Left because that’s all they have to make themselves feel better. Like LBJ said, if you give someone for them to look down own, they’ll empty their pockets for you. Meanwhile, most people on the Left literally don’t give a fuck and live their lives like normal people do.

Some liberal somewhere always finds a way to fuck up a good thing and make the rest of us look stupid. This is one of those things. Nobody—seriously, nobody believes Sydney Sweeney or American Eagle are advocating for eugenics. Sex sells, end of story.

Perhaps, in context with what’s happening in our country, someone got triggered. But it isn’t the brand’s fault that Trump is President, or Sweeney’s fault. This ad would cause zero controversy if Kamala was President.

I understood it as a play on words, but I can see the white supremacy/eugenics angle. Like, I could swear there was someone in history who really promoted blonde hair and blue eyes as the best thing ever.

Now the thing that really surprised me is how political talk shows and politicians latched on to all this. Sure it's in blogs, Facebook posts, and tweets, but I figured it wouldn't go "mainstream" per se.

But here we are. The Daily Show had a great take on it.

Another manufactured outrage from the right. I've managed to avoid knowing anything about this and I'm definitely excessively online and left.

The entire right wing media ecosystem exists to make mountains out of mole hills or even thin air if necessary. This is the last one.

Yep. The right wing ecosystem will take anything that anyone who might be left of center says, even if it is some giant nobody, and attribute to ALL people left of Mussolini so they can continue to feed the right-wing outrage machine.

Same. Couldn't have said it any better.

My guess is whoever came up with that add got a big bonus and a promotion. It's getting played everywhere, getting talked about, getting a hundred times the exposure it normally would. It's either absolutely inspired or a really happy accident.

Im going to go with manufactured rage created by the right. As in they have fake "liberal" online accounts they create this drama from.

Yeah after seeing the commercial I felt intensely aroused.

Wait, what were we talking about?

Oh yeah, it was just a silly play on words and I don't think "Sidney Sweeny is an attractive woman with good genes" is a controversial statement.

Commercial would have hit a lot harder if they had some fat ugly bucktoothed lady who couldn't get the genes to button instead. Skit based comedy shows, get on it, stat!

Wait…was this outrage manufactured by the right, or manufactured by the media for clicks?? I actually think the latter is more plausible. Sure, the trollosphere will feed off of it—but this blew up in my feeds because of more mainstream outlets.

The outrage is the claim there is outrage about this. It's a false flag blaming the left about something they don't give a damn about.

SS is an actress famous because she has great boobs, is willing to get naked and lucked up with a groundbreaking TV show. That's it. As I hate to say this is a nothingburger.

BTW - The big outrage is her initials match the name of the Nazi secret police 😉

I predict right wingers esp the white nationalists will hold her up as their symbol of purity and it will force her to make some kind of public statement.

The original article I saw (posted in a more conservative place than here) sourced the outrage from a couple TikTok accounts and one Threads account, all from people that don't have a particularly large following (the biggest one has almost 19k, the others are 2-3k, not sure how many they had before this thing).

Oh I know, he just doesn't get to ever say someone hasn't attempted to help him learn. Also it's a great series on how the fuck we got to the shitshow that is the current mess. The last 4 episodes are great at breaking down how right wing media comes from a very different approach.
