Is there anywhere it's not safe to set my headphones?

I read something in the manual about being careful with the magnets inside the phones? Does that mean it's bad to set them on my tower or something?

I wouldnt rub them all over your CRT monitor, or lay them on a harddrive.

Well....I was thinking the other way around. Like by my mic, on top of tower, etc.

Let me create you a headphone sandwich:

2 books, headphones, floor

Depending on the sensitivity of the headphones, the magnets inside may be susceptible to electromagnetic radiation, which may cause reduced sensitivity or audio-spectral distortion after long-term exposure. In other words, keep them away from anything that has a magnet in it!

Well how far are we talking here it should be away from speakers, mic, HDD? This is a bit ridiculous, I have many speakers, and a mic, and my tower on the floor, my headphones are close to all of them!

The question here is, how close and for how long can headphones be near something with a magnet and not be affected. Are sitting them two inches in front of my mic for many days okay? Is sitting them on my tower (probably about a foot above my HDD) for many days okay?

Don't put the on the floor near your seat (lost to many that way) especially if you have a rolling chair. Also if you have a temper and play games like Quake 3 or CS don't keep them at all... they will break faster than you can make money to replace them.

Serious: I wouldn't worry about where you put them. The magnetic current is not that strong whatsoever. Its true you can mess up a floppy disk with a fairly strong magnet but your HD would need to be hit by a much stronger magnet to be affected. The monitor however might be the only thing that might be damaged. If you set you headphones on top the distance between the headphones and the screen is enough to not cause any problems. If you super glue your headphones to the glass shield after a few days you *might* see some permanent damage, other than the super glue of course.

LOL!

No headphone magnet will ever do jack to a hard drive. Have you seen the magnets that are INSIDE a hard drive that are used as a part of the actuator mechanism?

Nothing short of an electromagnet will hurt a hard drive.

He's talking about the headphones being damaged by devices.

Also unlikely. Field density is generally not sufficient for one permanent magnet to have any kind of lasting effect on another unless one of the magnets is very weak. While the magnets in the headphones are small, I would have a very hard time believing they are weak enough in terms of field density to be permanently affected.

Methinks the line in the manual is pure CYA (Cover Your A-something)

I know, I posted above that I find it very unlikely that normal magnitude magnetic fields are going to damage headphones. I can't believe at all that the magnets in headphones would be able to damage a harddrive :).

What kind of headphones did you get?! Sennheiser's??
Expensive headphones.
I could see something like this having a disclaimer. If I paid $550 for headphones, I would want to know how to take care of them.
But I don't worry too much about my $15 Logitech's. I set them on the floor every night after BF2.

I dont think the magnets in the headphones are powerfull enough to corrupt the data of the hardrive.
