If I posted your/you're correctly you would have understood that OS-X is based on UNIX?

You are out of line because you have become personally vituperative over nothing. So, I should have said the Mac OS X is a cousin of linux, but the fact remains that it bears more resemblance to linux than to previous iterations of the Mac OS, and since when is any of this this any reason to get nasty?

I hate it. I hate the interface, I hate the GUI, I hate the "mac way" of doing things.

So than windows 3.11 must have stabbed you in the back and had sex with your mother? Cause Win 95 was sure as hell a lot better than 3.1!

Command N opens new windows generally. Holding the mouse button opens the "right click" menu, I think. I'm used to having a hand on the keyboard, so pushing a button instead of relying on my twitchy fingers works out well.

I like apple and the products they make I would be willing to give a faster Mac a second chance but I just don't know that faster is going to make it any better.

One thing I do know is that I'm building my g/f a new desktop to replace the Mac because she had to use my machine one day and noticed how much easier it was to use... She's only had the Mac and nothing else for 3 years and was able to jump on the PC and do everything she needed with next to no learning curve. I'm a PC tech with 5 years expierence under my belt and it took me an hour just to get some basic work done.

I like OS X, but I like XP better because it's much easier to mess with the scary advanced settings! Also, Apple seriously needs to GET OUT OF THE STONE AGE and start shipping everything with multibutton mice.

Why? They aren't necessary.

You are correct, they are not necessary just like owning a computer is not neccessary, but they are FREAKING nice to have (and to game with). I have a hard time using anything with less than 5 buttons now (at the very least it MUST have a scroll wheel).

This, of course, is a moot point in a OS X arena as you can add about any mouse you want to an Apple, but good golly man, how could say they aren't necessary!?!?! ;)

I don't like OSX...

However at least now I can stand using Macs, where as back in the OS 9 days I would do everything possible to avoid them.

OS 9 is easier to use than Win2k. It was still trash compared to Win2k, but it was easier.

Well, it looks perty.

Haven't used it enough to have any real opinion.

I'd use it over XP if it was available (officially) on x86 platform w/ decent vendor support.

OS 9 is just retard. I can't rember everything I hated about using it but some of the things just pissed me off like when I closed a window it left the application running in the background, it sucked to multitask and it was on the stupid Imacs with half a keyboard and a screwed up mouse.

It's nice, I can get around in it, and I like the ability to drop to a bsd term. Otherwise it offers me nothing that I deem as purchase worthy.

The OS has a great development environment that is definatly above and beyond. The reality is that OSX just like most mac software/os stuff is ahead of its time and will never "catch on" to its full potential. There will always be a fan base associated with macintosh/apple. The rest of the end users and businesses will be hard up to justify the high costs of apple computers as well as the entire switching over to a new platform and having to learn it.

Yea sure but you just jumped like 5 years in the future with OS9... Win95 was a real OS released in 1995 when was OS9 released and what did Macs have in '95? I'll answer. CRAP. You call it trash but say it was easier to use that?s just one hell of a contradiction in my book. How can something be easier to use but still be trash?

OSX is no more stable than windows, Its crashed on my iBook more times this past week than a whole year of windows on my laptop and desktop combined - this is on a fresh OSX install too. I guess there are some things you can't do if OSX is picky about it, especially if your hardware isn't the fastest. Other than that it is a functional OS. My only gripe is that its perfect if you're eitehr A. a computer dumb@$$ and have next to no clue how to use one, or B. a highly advanced Mac OSX/Unix user. I'm neither so I can get my work done but I can't really play around on it much. Apple is really anal about letting their users mess around on their systems.

Of which that is another flaw. OSX could be serious competition for Windows if and only if Apple pulled their heads out of their asses and supplied their OS and software for x86 (and future PC platforms). They'll never compete with Microsoft because when it comes to computers they pretty much exclusively develop software for the PC, not produce and sell PCs themselves. Just as Dell focuses on producing PCs, not the software. Windows will never have competition otherwise, or at least once we can start building our own "Mac" computers or buying from some other 3rd party...which will never happen.

And those that say productivity is higher on Apple systems, well that might be true if only because there are too many pieces of software (including games) for PC that can distract you from being productive ;) (whereas with my iBook I can pretty much only surf, chat, or do work, and if I don't have a convenient internet connection...)
