Technically, but Windows only runs on x86 hardware. Darwin has been ported to and maintained on multiple architectures though.

I think osx is amazing, in terms of usability and feel is way more advanced than windows and lightyears away from any linux distro

i actually care about other things besides the GUI when it comes to evaluating an OS so yes there are people who don't like it.

well it is unix after all... so most of the other notable features are covered. What exactly does it lack (other than game ports)

Ameesh is a Microsoft fan. He likes the Microsoft way, and doesn't hold any love for the unix philosophy.

Are you splitting hairs? It isn't purely linux, but closer than to previous Mac OSs.

I can run Linux, Unix, and Windows on x86. x86 isn't proprietary. When is OS X going to join the club? Probably never, and Apple wants it that way. How many usefull OSes can you load on Apple's hardware that are not made by Apple? Proprietary across the board.

If I could load OS X on one of the half dozen machines I have access to I might. If Apple wasn't so proud of their hardware I might have half a dozen Apple machines...

I also don't support many Sony products for the same reasons. Price and proprietary formats.

We're not splitting hairs at all. I'll read the link in a bit, but Mac OS X has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH LINUX. It's that simple. It's a BSD userland, with a Mach and FreeBSD kernel. NOT LINUX.

First, Linux and OS-X are both based on UNIX, so of course have similarities. Second, YOUR the one who corrected n0cmonkey, so if anyone is splitting hairs it's YOU. Finally, in case you didn't click on the link and read the 50 point bolded font title, I'll tell you what it says.

Based on UNIX

That's from the OS developers, perhaps a trustworth source. Now please STFU and again, don't correct someone when your not right.

I can run Linux, Unix, and Windows on x86. x86 isn't proprietary.

I can run Unix, Linux, Darwin, OpenBSD, and NetBSD on PPC platforms. The only one not available for Apple hardware is Unix. PPC is not proprietary.

When is OS X going to join the club? Probably never, and Apple wants it that way. How many usefull OSes can you load on Apple's hardware that are not made by Apple? Proprietary across the board.

At least 4. PPC is not proprietary.

If I could load OS X on one of the half dozen machines I have access to I might. If Apple wasn't so proud of their hardware I might have half a dozen Apple machines...

Apple would die if it tried to use Microsoft's business model. It's as simple as that.

I also don't support many Sony products for the same reasons. Price and proprietary formats.

What's so proprietary that Sony makes? I'm truly ignorant on this one.

Linux wasn't based on Unix, and OS X is barely based on it (depending on the definition you use of Unix). ;)

Your point would have made a better impact if you phrased it politely: Apple Macintosh systems do not do what I require from a computer.

I might actually get an apple setup if

a: My wife would like me have more than 3 computers

b: Apple comps did not cost so freaking much

c: repeat 'b'

They are fun to mess around with (some very cool features) but I don't feel like taking the time (or the money) to switch completely over. That and I LOOOOOVE computer games.

OK, PPC, yes, but are all new machines PPC? (Ignorant here) I though that was a line of machines, at least it was at one point.

OK, so maybe the hardware isn't has proprietary as I though...

Why do you tink Apple would die if the used MS model? Why wouldn't they be able to compete?

Sony=Betamax, Betacam, MiniDisk, Memory Sticks, ATRAC you name it. Sony=proprietary, sometimes they relax and use standard formats. Their music players just recently started accepting MP3 formats, if that tells you anything.

I like OS X, but I like XP better because it's much easier to mess with the scary advanced settings! Also, Apple seriously needs to GET OUT OF THE STONE AGE and start shipping everything with multibutton mice.

It's all PPC.

OK, so maybe the hardware isn't has proprietary as I though...

The chipset is the most (only?) proprietary part.

Why do you tink Apple would die if the used MS model? Why wouldn't they be able to compete?

I've outlined it before, but here you go:
No one would develop for them anymore, after having been switched from m68k -> PPC, and then from OS 9 to OS X.
Long time Apple users would be put off for seeing no new machines ever coming out.
The OS would cost more than Windows, since Apple wouldn't have the bulk sales Microsoft has.
Apple would spend oodles more money developping drivers, dealing with crappy hardware, etc.

Sony=Betamax, Betacam, MiniDisk, Memory Sticks, ATRAC you name it. Sony=proprietary, sometimes they relax and use standard formats. Their music players just recently started accepting MP3 formats, if that tells you anything.

Thanks for the info.

Why? They aren't necessary.

I have never been impressed with any of the other OS. They all seem like a pain in the ass to use compared to windows 95 and newer.

First, I'm right, so I'm not out of line.

When I'm posting incorrect information I might be out of line. Even then I would probably apologize, but I sure the hell woudn't correct some stupid fvcking grammer mistake.

If I posted your/you're correctly you would have understood that OS-X is based on UNIX?

Win95 was a huge pain in the butt. Especially compared to classic Mac OS (which was trash).

OSX was a definate step in the right direction from Apple. However due to the amount of gaming I do, I just cant in my right mind pay the premium price of them. I'll always stick to PCs... unless I can get a really cheap widescreen iBook. (I dont game on laptops ;))

I cannot stand using my g/f's Mac laptop its an ibook G3 I think so yea it's on the slow side already but my god is the thing just dog f'ing slow... Everything about that OS is hard to use I dont understand how you guys can say it has productivity advantages over windows. Having to hold ctrl and click just to open a new window or anything else that isn't done with a single mouse button is just f'ing stupid. I haven't been forced to use it long enough to actually get used to the way it runs but going from windows to OSX it was like going from a BMW to a YUGO!
